OpenAI is expanding advertising in ChatGPT with a new visual ad format that will appear during image generation. As the ChatGPT maker explains, the ads are designed to help users discover products and understand how they may fit into their lives. The ads will be clearly marked and kept separate from the image generated by ChatGPT. The company will start testing the format later this month in the US with a small group of advertisers. It also says ads will not affect the answers generated by ChatGPT.
SurveyThe new format will focus on visual content. For example, an ad could show a product, how it is used, or an experience linked to a service. OpenAI says this will give businesses another way to explain what makes their products different.
The company said, “Ads will be clearly labelled, and remain separate from the image being created.” It also stressed that “advertising does not influence the answers ChatGPT provides.”
OpenAI is also expanding its tools for advertisers to measure how their campaigns perform. “Integrations with Hightouch, Tealium, and LiveRamp make it easier for advertisers to send conversion data from their existing systems to ChatGPT Ads,” it said.

OpenAI also wants to give advertisers more information about where their ads appear. Its advertising policies are designed to keep ads away from sensitive or emotionally vulnerable conversations. The company says automated checks, human review and regular monitoring are used to enforce these rules.
“For narrow placement requirements specific to a brand’s own policies, Negative Phrases are now available to qualifying advertisers,” the company said.

For users, the key change is that ads will become more visual inside ChatGPT. OpenAI says it will keep ads separate from ChatGPT’s responses and generated content. It also says conversations will remain private and users will stay in control of their experience.
