With the rise of AI tools that can write code, many worry that they will replace jobs. But Anthony Goto, a staff engineer at Netflix with 15 years of experience at the streaming giant and Uber alone, believes that coding jobs are far from disappearing. In a recent TikTok video, Goto addressed concerns he often hears from recent graduates and junior engineers, reports Business Insider.
Survey“We’re going to see some amazing things, but our hunger for more functionality, more apps, more ecosystems is just gonna get higher, and higher, and higher,” he said. “So, in the end, I think this is gonna be another, essentially, level of programming language, a high-level programming language.”

While AI tools like Anthropic’s Claude have made it easier for anyone to write code, Goto stressed that skilled engineers will still be in demand. He said that one way for newer developers to stay competitive is by learning System Design. “System Design is exactly what I am trying to ensure newer engineers get a handle on,” he explained. “In the future, we may likely end up wielding system design like a tool.”
Goto admits his predictions might not be perfect, but he sees a clear trend. “We’ve seen this many times before, where we abstract things away in a really powerful way,” he said. “And what it really does is democratizes the process.”

He stressed that within a few years, AI will be capable of doing work that takes months. This shift could reduce the number of people needed for certain knowledge-based jobs.
