An Xbox that is also a PC might be coming next, details here
Microsoft might just be planning to blur the lines between console and PC with its next-generation Xbox. In recent interviews, Xbox president Sarah Bond confirmed that a new console is already in development, describing it as a “very premium, very high-end curated experience” built in partnership with AMD. Her statements, made to Variety and Mashable, hint that the upcoming Xbox could function more like a gaming PC which would be open, modular, and deeply tied to Windows. While Microsoft is expanding its handheld ecosystem through the AsusROG Xbox Ally series, Bond insisted that traditional consoles remain central to Xbox’s future, only now with a smarter, more flexible twist.

A new step for Xbox?
In an interview with Variety, Bond said the response to the ROG Xbox Ally has been “overwhelming,” but clarified that the project was never meant to replace the home console experience. ‘We are 100 percent looking at making things in the future. We have our next-gen hardware in development. We’ve been looking at prototyping, designing,’ she said. The upcoming platform, built on AMD’s latest architecture, is reportedly codenamed Magnus and could feature a modular design, allowing components like the CPU and GPU to be swapped or upgraded over time, as noted in a report by Tom’s Guide.
Microsoft is also expanding its Handheld Compatibility Program, signalling that more manufacturers could soon launch devices running the Xbox interface.
Bond also said in the interview that the goal is to give players multiple hardware options, from powerful next-gen systems to portable devices that bring PC gaming on the go. ‘We want to make sure there’s an option for the power players who want the latest innovations and want to push the edge of what’s possible,’ she added.
PC-like experience in an Xbox
In a separate interview with Mashable, Bond dropped subtle hints about what to expect from Microsoft’s next flagship console, describing it as a “very premium, very high-end curated experience.” When asked about speculation that the console will feel more like a gaming PC, she didn’t confirm anything directly but also didn’t dismiss the idea. ‘You’re starting to see some of the thinking we have in this handheld, but I don’t want to give it all away,’ she said.
Microsoft had earlier confirmed that the next-gen Xbox will use an AMD chip, run on Windows, and remain compatible with existing Xbox games. Crucially, it will not be “locked to a single store,” suggesting deeper integration with Windows and potentially more openness in how games are distributed. Bond’s earlier remarks from June back this direction, when she announced a multi-year partnership with AMD and reaffirmed Microsoft’s commitment to making Windows the “number one platform for gaming.”
Taken together, these comments point toward a bold shift in strategy. The next Xbox might blur the line between console and PC, combining traditional living-room power with the flexibility of Windows. The ROG Ally X handheld could be an early preview of that vision- a $1,000 device testing both the market’s appetite for high-end gaming hardware and for a unified Xbox ecosystem that stretches across screens and form factors.
