Love WhatsApp stickers? You may soon get option to add sound to your sticker packs, what we know

HIGHLIGHTS

Meta's WhatsApp is developing sound stickers for Android that may play audio when tapped in the app.

Users may be able to create personalised sound stickers using audio clips or videos.

The feature is under development and could reach beta testers in the coming weeks.

WhatsApp, an instant messaging platform, rolls out and tests new features regularly. Soon after rolling out scheduled messages for beta testers, the Meta app is reportedly developing a feature that could allow sharing of sound-based stickers. According to a report from WABetaInfo, the sent stickers will play a sound when a user shares them. This will add another segment to the existing animated and static sticker pack experience. Users may be able to create their own custom stickers with sound when the feature starts rolling out.

The feature is currently under development in the Android app and is not available to beta testers. Soon after removing avatar stickers, the “sound stickers” could be WhatsApp’s next attempt to entice users who engage with stickers in chats, the report added. The feature was spotted in the Android app version “2.26.41.3” and is expected to make sticker chats more interactive, as stickers may respond to a tap using sound.

While the sticker may play audio with a tap via the sound icon at the top right, it will likely be displayed in the traditional format of standard stickers. Besides sound stickers from the official store, users may be able to create their own personalised stickers with an audio clip. This may include converting a video to an audio-based animated sticker.

Unlike the ringer settings, where the sticker is played with sound and can be muted from the volume icon, these may play without audio when the phone is in silent mode, the WhatsApp tracker noted. If a user decides to mute a sound sticker, the platform may remember the setting and keep all sound stickers muted until the user changes it.

If WhatsApp does not change plans, the feature is expected to roll out to beta testers in the coming weeks. Meanwhile, the company is also testing message scheduling for up to two weeks in the app. Currently available to select beta testers, the feature can be triggered by a tap-and-hold on the send button.
