EXCLUSIVE: Samsung’s head of smartphone planning confirms tri-fold development, launch likely this year

HIGHLIGHTS

Samsung has confirmed that its tri-fold phone is in development, with plans to launch by the end of 2025.

This could mark Samsung's boldest move in foldables since the original Galaxy Fold, offering a unique triple-folding display.

If launched, Samsung will become only the second company after Huawei to commercialize a tri-fold smartphone.

EXCLUSIVE: Samsung’s head of smartphone planning confirms tri-fold development, launch likely this year

Samsung is working on its tri-fold phone and is not far from launching it in the market. While the phone has been rumoured for a while, Samsung head of smartphone planning has now confirmed that it is already in development stage. The Korean tech giant is looking at possibilities of making the phone commercially available by the end of this year, Minseok Kang, VP and Head of Smartphone Product Planning at Samsung, told Times Now Tech and Digit on the sidelines of the Galaxy Unpacked event in New Year.

Samsung used the event to launch its next generation foldable phone — Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Galaxy Z Flip 7 — but the rumoured tri-fold or Galaxy G Fold was missing from the keynote. However, it’s confirmed now that the launch is actually not that far.

“Tri-folding is a new endeavour. It’s more complex. Yes, I’m assessing that,” Kang said in response to our question, soon after the Unpacked event was over. “In terms of tri-folding, the device is under development. As I mentioned before, when we launch a new device or new form factor, important considerations include completeness in the form factor itself and ensuring user satisfaction along with readiness for mass production.”

He said that Samsung is evaluating all possibilities and if everything goes as per plan, can launch the device as soon as by the end of this year.

“We are evaluating key points for the final decision to commercialise the device. I can say that our current target is to launch this device by the end of this year,” he added.

This is the first time Samsung has officially spoken about the device. It could be the next big innovation when it comes to foldable smartphones — a category that hasn’t seen a lot of innovation since its inception.

This would also make Samsung only the second smartphone maker to bring a tri-fold phone to the market. The only other company that sells a tri-fold phone in the market is Huawei.

As of now, this is the only information available on the upcoming tri-fold from Samsung. It is possible that the company holds a separate launch event for it later in the year, but it’s possible that the phone makes its appearance alongside the Galaxy S26 series at the next Unpacked event in January 2026.
