Confused between portable AC and air cooler? From price to power consumption, every key factor compared

Heat in the summer season makes people look for affordable cooling solutions. Two popular options are portable ACs and air coolers. Both are designed to cool your room, but they work very differently and suit different needs. Which one is best for you depends on your local climate, budget, power consumption & more. Knowing the differences between these appliances will help you make a smarter buying decision. Here is a quick comparison of portable ACs and air coolers.

Portable AC vs air cooler: Price

Air coolers are more affordable than portable ACs. Most air coolers are available for between Rs 3,000 and Rs 15,000, making them a popular choice for budget-conscious buyers. Portable ACs are more expensive, and range from Rs 25,000 to Rs 60,000.

Portable AC vs air cooler: Power consumption

Air coolers usually consume less electricity than portable ACs. They take about 80W and 200W of electricity. Portable ACs use a compressor to cool the room, which requires much more power. So, most models consume around 900W to 1,500W.

Portable AC vs air cooler: How they work

Air coolers use evaporative cooling. They pull hot air through water-soaked cooling pads. As the water evaporates, the air becomes cooler before being pushed into the room. Meanwhile, portable ACs work like regular ACs. They remove heat from indoor air using refrigerant. The hot air is then thrown through a hose connected to a wall opening.

Portable AC vs air cooler: Climate

Air coolers work better in dry and hot regions where humidity levels are low. In humid weather, air coolers may not be very effective because they add more moisture to the air. This can make the room feel uncomfortable and sticky. Portable ACs are a better choice for hot and humid areas. They cool the room while also removing excess moisture.

Portable AC vs air cooler: Maintenance and setup

Air coolers require regular refilling of water. Users also need to clean the water tank and cooling pads from time to time to prevent bad odours and mould growth. On the other hand, portable ACs do not need water but require a window or wall opening to release hot air outside. You have to regularly clean filters and some models may require draining of collected water.

Portable AC vs air cooler: Which one should you choose

You should buy an air cooler if you live in a dry climate, want lower electricity bills and are looking for an affordable cooling option. Go for a portable AC if you live in a humid area, need stronger cooling and want better temperature control.
