Foldable iPhone incoming? Apple reportedly begins display production for 2026 launch

Following numerous leaks and speculations, Apple is reportedly preparing to launch the first foldable iPhone by beginning production of foldable OLED displays. This comes after a report by Korea’s ETNews claimed that the displays are currently being manufactured by Samsung Display. The report also added that a dedicated production line in A3 factory in Asan, South Korea has been set up and is capable of making up to 15 million 7-inch foldable OLED panels annually. However, Apple is said to manufacture around 6 to 8 million units of the foldable iPhone in 2026.

If the reports are believed to be true, Apple’s first iPhone foldable will get an inward-folding design with a 7-inch OLED screen with a 4:3 aspect ratio and a crease-free finish. Following the trend, Apple may also bring a super-thin 4.5mm profile, Touch ID instead of Face ID, and a dual rear camera system with wide and ultra-wide lenses. Under the hood, we may get to see Apple silicone’s A20 chipset.

According to MacRumors, Apple usually has a diverse supply chain but Samsung Display is said to be the exclusive panel supplier for the foldable iPhone due to its experience in foldable technology. The trust might be because Samsung has been making foldable smartphones commercially since 2019 and previously played a key role in Apple’s transition from LCD to OLED with the iPhone X.

iPhone Fold price and launch timeline (Tipped)

As per the reports, the iPhone Fold could launch along with the iPhone 18 series in 2026 and may cost a whopping $2,000. The reports suggest that it is still limited to production stages. It is possible that Apple may keep the product in select markets due to its hefty price tag.

Good thing? The fans will have yet another option in the Apple lineup, probably with better design, performance, and optimisation.
