Dolby Cinema debuts in India: Here’s what makes it different from a regular theatre
There’s a new kind of movie theatre in India. Dolby has officially launched its first Dolby Cinema located at City Pride, Kharadi in Pune. This purpose-built 310-seater auditorium is designed to deliver an elevated moviegoing experience, one that integrates Dolby’s most advanced audio-visual technologies in a theatre environment crafted to support them.
SurveyBut what even is Dolby Cinema?
Dolby Cinema combines both Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos, two technologies that have become industry standards in premium entertainment.
Dolby Vision is delivered via a dual 4K laser projection system and offers exceptional contrast, brightness, and clarity, resulting in picture quality that reveals subtle details often lost in conventional projection.
Meanwhile, Dolby Atmos brings immersive and spatial sound to the space and enables audio to move around the auditorium with precision. Combined together, the Dolby Cinema experience aims to draw the viewer deeper into the story.
And it’s not just Dolby Vision and Atmos, the auditorium’s architecture is an essential part of the experience and every element inside it is tuned for immersive storytelling. The auditorium has a curved wall-to-wall-to-ceiling screen, precision-designed acoustics and sightlines which are minimal yet impactful, dynamic lighting, plush seating, and thoughtful spatial planning help maintain focus on the film while minimising distractions.
Whether it’s a visually demanding sci-fi epic or a quieter character-driven drama, the environment is built to support a more immersive kind of storytelling.
The inaugural screening at City Pride, Kharadi, begins with Jurassic World Rebirth, releasing in both Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos. This is also not a one-off. Dolby has confirmed five more Dolby Cinema installations are currently underway: in Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Trichy, Kochi, and Ulikkal.
Globally, over 740 theatrical releases have embraced the Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos formats, and in India, this first Dolby Cinema opening signals a growing appetite for premium formats that offer more than just high resolution or surround sound, but a deeply considered, end-to-end experience for cinema enthusiasts.
Michael Archer, Vice President of Worldwide Cinema Sales and Partner Management, Dolby Laboratories commented, “The launch of Dolby Cinema in Pune marks a defining step in our long-term vision for India. With over 1000+ Dolby Atmos screens in India, now Dolby Cinema will set a new benchmark in premium cinematic entertainment in India.”
