Apple iPhone 17 Pro may miss out on this important feature

Apple is likely to unveil the next generation of iPhones – the iPhone 17 series later this year, in September. The phones are still months away from their debut, but rumours and leaks have shed light on the expected features. One of the most anticipated upgrades was a new anti-reflective, scratch-resistant display coating exclusive to iPhone 17 Pro models. However, a recent report suggests Apple may have cancelled the feature due to production challenges.

For the unversed, the existing iPhones come with an oleophobic (oil-resistant) display coating. Apple introduced the fingerprint-resistant oleophobic coating on iPhone 12 series in 2020. Read out all details here.

Apple iPhone 17 Pro may retain the oleophobic coating

As reported by MacRumors, Apple may have dropped the plan to use the super scratch-resistant anti-reflective display coating for the iPhone 17 Pro. The company reportedly ran into difficulties scaling up the display coating. Given the massive production of devices, the process for anti-reflective display coating was “too slow.” Even though the feature was supposed to arrive only on the iPhone 17 Pro, it seems impossible this year.

A Weibo leaker, Instant Digital, previously tipped that Apple is working on a new anti-reflective display layer for improved scratch resistance.

The expected feature seems to be the same as Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra’s Gorilla Glass Armor display panel, which reduces around 75% of reflections. Apple’s current M4-powered MacBook Pro, iPad Pro, and iMac also feature similar nano-textured displays that minimise glare.

Meanwhile, Apple is likely to drop the Plus model with the iPhone 17 series and introduce a new iPhone 17 Air instead. The top-of-the-line iPhone 17 Pro Max ( or iPhone 17 Ultra) is tipped to get significant camera upgrades and a dedicated vapour cooling chamber. The device could be equipped with an A19 Pro chipset, a 6.9-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display offering a 120Hz refresh rate.
