Instagram is expanding teen accounts to India: Here’s how it will make the platform safer for young users
Teen accounts will be private by default, with restricted messaging and content moderation.
Parents can monitor interactions, set screen time limits, and block access during specific hours.
Meta may be introducing ID verification and video selfies to prevent users from faking their age.
After introducing Teen Accounts for users in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia, Instagram is now expanding the feature to Indian users. To improve the safety and well-being of teenagers, the platform will now provide stricter privacy settings, content controls, and interaction limits for users under 16.
SurveyAll Instagram users under the age of 16 will have private accounts by default, which will include safety features like restricted messaging, content moderation, and time-limit reminders. Sleep mode will also help teens manage their screen time.
Additionally, Meta-owned social media platforms provide enhanced parental supervision. Certain account setting changes will now require parental permission, while those with children over the age of 16 can enable supervision features on their own. Parents can also monitor who their children interact with on the platform (but not read their messages), set screen time, and block Instagram access during specific hours.

Meta has also limited messaging options to prevent unwanted interactions, allowing the children to receive messages from people who are connected to them. Furthermore, the platform will only allow people they follow to tag them. Offending words and phrases will be automatically filtered out, and content such as fight videos will be removed from their Reels and Explore section.

The tech titan has also announced an interest-based content customisation option, with children able to select from topics such as Soccer, Crafts, Dance, Music & Audio, Cats, Food & Drink, and many more.
If you’re concerned about someone faking their age, Meta is reportedly working on stricter age verification methods such as ID verifications, video selfie recordings, and more to ensure that young users are protected.
