Resident Evil Requiem may have a connection to the original Resident Evil: Here’s what we know

As soon as Resident Evil Requiem was made official, fans of the popular survival horror franchise began flooding the internet with their theories and expectations from the game. From Grace and Alyssa Ashcroft’s story to other popular characters from previous RE games making an appearance, there is a lot that fans are predicting. But as far as Capcom is concerned, they have been treating Resident Evil fans like they’re on a strict information diet. Ever since Requiem was revealed at Summer Game Fest 2025, the studio has barely said a word, dropped barely any footage and kept its cards glued to its chest.

But now, that silence might just have a crack. A new broadcast on Japanese TV has finally shown proper gameplay and it looks like Capcom is steering Requiem straight back into old-school, zombie-soaked survival horror. And yes, it’s the first time we’re seeing protagonist Grace Ashcroft actually fire a weapon in this game.

Resident Evil Requiem’s connection with RE 1

Shared online by well-known leaker Dusk Golem, the new clip shows Grace Ashcroft walking through a dim corridor before pulling out a pistol, taking aim and missing a shot on a shambling zombie. What follows is peak classic RE chaos. The zombie lunges, bites her arm and forces her to shake it off while another undead steps out from the hallway like it’s waiting its turn. The sequence feels like a direct nod to Resident Evil 2’s opening encounters, right down to the cramped spaces and slow, suffocating tension.

Another part of the footage briefly shows Grace moving through what looks like an old mansion staircase bathed in soft lighting. Fans online immediately started calling it “Spencer Mansion energy”, even though it’s not literally the same building. But the vibe is unmistakably early-era Resident Evil. After months of only seeing the game’s stalker-type enemy in previous teasers, this taste of standard zombies is exactly what fans have been begging to see.

And if rumours hold any weight, Grace won’t be the only person taking on the undead. Leon S. Kennedy’s name has been floating around the community for months as a potential second playable character. Capcom refuses to confirm it outright, but they recently hinted that familiar faces tied to the Raccoon City incident are returning. Which… well, it’s hard not to connect the dots.

The Game Awards 2025 role

The bigger mystery right now isn’t what’s in the footage. It’s why Capcom decided to drop it in such a low-key way. The reveal aired on Japanese TV instead of a global stage, which only adds to the almost awkward pacing of Requiem’s marketing. But this small teaser might be the start of Capcom finally turning the lights on.

The Game Awards 2025 takes place on December 11, and given Geoff Keighley’s history of securing major Resident Evil announcements, fans are already predicting a big Requiem reveal on that stage. Capcom has also confirmed a dedicated Resident Evil showcase for early 2026, which likely means the marketing engine is about to ramp up hard as we get closer to release.

And time is running out. Resident Evil Requiem launches on February 27, 2026 for PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S and Nintendo Switch 2. If Capcom plans to show more than these brief scraps, they’ll have to do it soon.
