HIGHLIGHTS

Airtel launches Priority Postpaid with 5G network slicing in India.

The service aims to offer smoother internet during travel, streaming, and crowded events.

Existing postpaid users will get the feature automatically on supported 5G phones.

Bharti Airtel on Tuesday introduced a new service called Priority Postpaid. With this, Airtel became the first telecom operator in India to bring 5G network slicing technology to mobile users. According to the company, the service will help the users who rely heavily on stable internet access throughout the day, especially during travel, crowded events, work meetings, and online streaming. With the new priority postpaid feature, Airtel is planning to improve the quality and consistency of its 5G network for the postpaid customers, especially during the peak traffic hours. The service will be available with all Airtel postpaid plans.

The slicing-based 5G services have already been launched in countries such as the United States, Singapore, the United Kingdom, and Malaysia previously. However, in India, Airtel is the first telecom operator to roll out this technology for commercial use. Do note that the users who want to enjoy this priority feature will require a smartphone that supports the 5G band and is running on the latest software. Not only that but they should have an active postpaid plan. The users who are on an existing postpaid plan will receive the service automatically, while new users can activate it through the Airtel Thanks, App or Airtel stores across India.

Shashwat Sharma, Managing Director and CEO of Airtel India, said the company’s focus remains on bringing practical improvements to customer experience. He added that Priority Postpaid is designed for situations where uninterrupted connectivity matters the most, such as video calls during travel, streaming at concerts, or booking rides in busy markets.

What is network slicing and how does it work?

Network slicing is one of the features used in 5G technology to split one network into several virtual networks. Network slices are created for certain purposes or user groups. Through network slicing, the network will be able to offer more efficient services depending on their requirements.

For example, through network slicing, Airtel can assign a certain network slice to its premium users such that they continue to have continuous connectivity despite the heavy burden on the network, particularly during special events.
