iPhone 18 may get these downgrades as Apple plans for cost cutting: All details

Apple is reportedly working to refresh its iPhone series, where it could launch its most awaited iPhone Fold along with the upcoming iPhone 18 series. If the rumours are to be trusted, then the iPhone 18 Pro series could make its debut in the fall of 2026, while the standard model might come later in 2027. However, a recent post on Weibo suggests that the upcoming standard iPhone 18 may not receive the high-end specs everyone is expecting. Instead, it could move closer to a more affordable model in terms of hardware and build choices. The leak suggests that Apple is planning to cut costs in several areas, which may change how the regular iPhone is positioned in the lineup.

The tipster Fixed Focus Digital claims that Apple may introduce a manufacturing downgrade for the standard iPhone 18, affecting the key areas such as production methods, chip choices, and memory components. He further claims that Apple might be aiming to reduce the costs of the handset and align its standard model more closely with the expected iPhone 18e.

If the leaks are to be trusted, then this would mark a shift in Apple’s usual approach, as Apple has created a clear gap between standard and budget models in recent years. This is clearly visible with the current iPhone 17 and iPhone 17e, as the differences include features like Dynamic Island, display quality, brightness, cameras, and battery life that justify the price difference between the two devices.

However, the latest leak suggests that the iPhone 18 and iPhone 18e could become much closer in terms of hardware. This raises questions about what will remain as key differences between the two models. It is not yet clear whether Apple will rely more on software features or minor design changes to separate them.

The same source also claims that their information has been verified through multiple channels. They previously reported that the iPhone 17e would keep a notch instead of adopting Dynamic Island, which later turned out to be accurate.

Another major detail from the leak is Apple’s possible shift to a split launch strategy. The flagship models, including the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max, may launch in the fall of 2026. While the standard iPhone 18, iPhone 18e, and maybe a new Air model could be released a few months later, around spring 2027. Apple has not yet confirmed the details for this split launch, but the leaks and rummours strongly suggest that Apple might be changing how it launches its smartphone to give buyers more choices and a clearer reason to upgrade across the year.
