India’s telephone subscriber base goes past 900 million: TRAI

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has released the latest telecom subscription data as of May 2013.

The number of telephone subscribers in India has hit 900.05 million at the end of May 2013 from 2013 from 897.02 million at the end of April 2013, registering a monthly growth rate of 0.34%. According to the latest telecom subscription data released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), the share of urban subscribers has decreased to 60.59% from 60.71% whereas share of rural subscribers has increased from 39.29% to 39.41% in the month of May 2013. With this, the overall Teledensity in India increased to 73.33 at the end of May, 2013 from 73.16 of the previous month.

In the wireless segment, total subscriber base has surged from 867.02 million in April 2013 to 870.20 million at the end of May 2013, registering a monthly growth of 0.37%. The share of urban wireless subscribers has decreased from 60.11% to 59.99% where as share of rural wireless subscribers has increased from 39.89% to 40.01%. The overall wireless Teledensity in India has reached 70.90 from 70.71 of previous month.

According to the TRAI, private operators hold 88.18% of the wireless market share (based on subscriber base) where as BSNL and MTNL, the two PSU operators hold only 11.82% market share.

Service provider wise, Reliance led with new 1201,156 subscribers addition while Vodafone added 910,320 subscribers. Idea stood at the third position with 867, 233 new users, Bharti Airtel added 851,999. Operators such as Loop, MTNL, Tata and BSNL posted negative growth ( in terms of net subscriber addition).

Service Provider wise Market Share

Users have continued to extensively use the Mobile Number Portability services. As per the data reported by the service providers, by the end of May 2013 about 93.56 million subscribers have submitted their requests to different service providers for porting their mobile number.

In MNP Zone-I (Northern & Western India) maximum number of requests have been received in Rajasthan (9.04 million) followed by Gujarat (7.98 million) whereas in MNP Zone-II (Southern & Eastern) maximum number of requests have been received in Karnataka (11.03 million) followed by Andhra Pradesh Service area (8.47 million). In the month of May 2013, total number of subscribers who have submitted their request for MNP is 1.83 million.
