Are Karbonn smartphones coming back to India? Here is what we know so far

HIGHLIGHTS

Karbonn is teasing 'something big' and 'Kammal Koming' on its website, fuelling speculation about a smartphone comeback.

The rumoured budget 4G phone could feature an LCD screen, a Unisoc or MediaTek chipset, up to 6GB RAM and Android 16.

Karbonn ZenZ Pro reportedly appeared on Geekbench recently with a MediaTek Helio G70 chipset and 6GB RAM.

After remaining out of the limelight in the smartphone market for years, it seems Indian-origin smartphone brand Karbonn could mark its second innings in India in the Android world. We say this as chatter on X (formerly Twitter) has started building that the company could make a comeback in the smartphone world soon. According to tech tipster Sanju Choudhary, Karbonn could make an official comeback with a 4G budget phone. Not only that, but the official website of Karbonn also hints at “something big” in the future.

Apart from claiming “something big is on its way”, Karbonn also teases “Kammal Koming” on its website. For context, the company currently sells keypad-based feature phones in the country. According to Choudhary, the phone may debut with a Unisoc or MediaTek chipset. Considering it will likely be a 4G budget offering, we can anticipate the phone to sit in the entry-level price segment of Rs 10,000-15,000, similar to new entrants like AI+, Mivi, Boltt and more.

The tipster also revealed the phone could ship with an LCD screen. As for storage trims, it may debut in 4GB and 6GB variants. The handset is expected to debut with Android 16 OS. However, the exact launch timeline and price remain out of scope for the leaks circle at the time of writing. Meanwhile, tipster Abhishek Yadav earlier spotted a phone dubbed Karbonn ZenZ Pro on Geekbench.

If ZenZ Pro debuts in the country, it may get an octa-core MediaTek Helio G70 chipset and a  Mali-G52 MC2 GPU. The phone could offer 6GB RAM and an Android 16-based operating system. Despite these listings, a reader must note that Karbonn has not confirmed the arrival of a particular smartphone in the country at the time of writing. Hence, these details should be taken with a grain of salt.

Karbonn is claiming to offer 500+ service centres for after-sales support. For the unversed, the domestic smartphone company gained prominence around the time of 2010s and witnessed a decline after the arrival of Chinese competitors (around 2014) such as Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo and more. The brand’s Titanium series phones were widely popular during that time. Apart from smartphones, Karbonn was also popular in the television and tablet market.
