OpenAI CEO Sam Altman recently took to X (formerly Twitter) to share the company’s future plans with ChatGPT. He shared that the company is currently working on GPT-4.5 and GPT-5 models. He even shared that the upcoming GPT-5 model, featuring the o3 reasoning model, will be available for free to all users. He accepted that ChatGPT’s previous model launches were a little complicated, and to simplify things, OpenAI will return to unified models, meaning the company will integrate the o3 model into its flagship AI and discontinue standalone o-models.

GPT-5 launch timeline

While Altman refrained from sharing the exact launch date for the GPT-5 model, his post hints that the model can be coming really soon. If we look at the company’s previous timeline, GPT-4, was launched in March 2023. This means that GPT-5 is already delayed. However, it is now expected to arrive sometime in the first half of 2025.

The highlight of Altman’s announcement was the fact that GPT-5 will be free for all users. This time, even the free-tier users will have unlimited access to GPT-5 at the standard intelligence setting, subject to certain usage limits. Meanwhile, Plus subscribers will get access to GPT-5 at a higher intelligence level, while Pro subscribers will have an even more advanced version.

Not just this, OpenAI’s recently introduced product- Deep Research which is an AI-powered agent designed to conduct detailed research within minutes, is also available for free now. Initially available for Pro users, Altman has confirmed that it will also be rolled out to free and Plus users with some restrictions. Free-tier users will get 2 uses per month, while Plus subscribers will have 10 uses.

We will keep you posted about the final launch date as and when the company decides to share it.
