Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang says AGI has arrived, credits OpenAI’s GPT-6 Astra for it
Huang said GPT-6 Astra represents the arrival of AGI and highlighted its massive Nvidia-powered training infrastructure.
OpenAI says Astra can handle tasks ranging from coding and cybersecurity to science and professional work.
AI researcher Gary Marcus disputed the claim, highlighting the lack of a universally accepted definition of AGI.
NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang has claimed that artificial general intelligence (AGI) is here. On X, he pointed to OpenAI’s recently released GPT-6 Astra, calling it a major milestone in the AI industry. He also congratulated the OpenAI team and also mentioned the massive Nvidia computing infrastructure used to train the model.
SurveyOn X, he wrote, ‘AGI has arrived,’ while noting the rapid progress of OpenAI’s AI models over the past four years. He also claimed that Astra was trained using more than 100,000 Nvidia Grace Blackwell NVLink72 systems, with another 400,000 Nvidia GPUs expected to come online.
Jensen Huang calls GPT-6 Astra an AGI milestone
For the unversed, Sam Altman and team introduced the GPT-6 Astra on September 3 and claimed that the new model can handle a variety of tasks, including computer use, software engineering, cybersecurity, scientific work and other professional applications.

OpenAI President Greg Brockman has also linked Astra to the company’s broader AGI ambitions. He described the launch as the beginning of the ‘AGI era’ and suggested that the development of Astra could eventually be seen as a big moment in the journey towards human-level artificial intelligence.
But speaking of what AGI generally means, we know it as an AI system capable of understanding, learning and performing a wide variety of tasks rather than being restricted to a specific domain. However, there is no specific definition to it.
Not everyone agrees that AGI is here
Huang’s claim has already sparked debate. AI researcher Gary Marcus challenged the declaration, arguing that simply calling a model AGI does not establish that it has achieved the capabilities associated with human-level general intelligence.
Companies developing frontier models increasingly argue that their systems are approaching, or have reached, AGI, while several researchers remain sceptical about whether current models truly possess general intelligence.
