No mobile network in Central Delhi? Here is why your calls and internet may not work

Mobile internet connections and calling services have reportedly been suspended in certain parts of central Delhi. The law enforcement authorities have installed mobile jammers near Jantar Mantar amid the Cockroach Janta Party’s (CJP’s) ‘Chalo Sansad’ march. Delhi Police has clarified that they have not provided CJP with any permission for the march. The protest from CJP coincided with the start of Parliament’s Monsoon Session. According to the protestors, the purpose of the protest was to call for the accountability of alleged irregularities in competitive exams and the resignation of Dharmendra Pradhan, the Union Education Minister. 

The Delhi Police have also put up barricades, riot control vehicles, and additional police personnel in the sensitive spots in order to maintain law and order in the city. It is also expected that they will not let the protesters reach Parliament. Meanwhile, several traffic restrictions and changes to public transport have affected daily commuters.

Travel disrupted

As the security around the city tightens, it has also affected the public movement across the city. Delhi Metro’s five stations have been reportedly closed. These include Rajiv Chowk, Janpath, Patel Chowk, Central Secretariat, and Seva Teerth. The closure has forced many commuters to change their daily commute routes, leading to delays during office hours.

What to do if mobile networks are not present

If you’re in an area where your phone can’t connect because of poor coverage or signal blocking, the safest and most reliable ways to stay in touch are:

• Try and look for Wi-Fi, as the mobile jammers do not affect the Wi-Fi networks.
• If you get access to a Wi-Fi network, then you can also enable the Wi-Fi calling on your device so that you can make a call over Wi-Fi.
• Use internet messaging or calling apps (such as WhatsApp, Signal, FaceTime, or similar) over Wi-Fi to reach out to your loved ones.
• If Wi-Fi is not available, then try moving away from your current location. Once you’re away from the jammer range, then your device will get the signals again.
• Look if you can find a landline connection to make a call. If you’re with other people, ask whether their carrier has coverage in that location.
• In an emergency, move to a location where you can reach emergency services, or ask someone in the law enforcement authorities to contact your loved ones on your behalf.
