Meta Muse can now talk and react in real time in face-to-face conversations, but is it safe?

Highlights

Users can start real-time conversations with Muse by tapping the phone icon in the app.

Muse can respond with facial expressions and gestures, and users can interrupt conversations to add information.

The feature offers voice-only, side-by-side avatar and full-screen modes.

Meta announced at its Connect 2026 event that it is testing an enhancement for Muse that will help the AI react and converse with the user in real time. In a recent move, the social media giant is now rolling out these real-time conversation capabilities in the Muse app in the US for mobile, web and Mac platforms. Meta said users can tap on the phone icon placed in the top-right to start a conversation with the AI avatar in real time.

Noting a few use cases, Meta said the real-time conversations with Muse can help enhance a user’s trip planning ideas, order groceries, send messages to people, invite them to events, prepare for a job interview or pitch presentations and more.

Apart from talking in real time, Muse can complement the conversation in the chat with “subtle expressions and gestures” to match the overall tone of chats. Muse can react as people speak in conversation to let people know that the AI agent is listening. Plus, these conversations can also be interrupted to add information.

Meta Muse face-to-face conversation in real time

Users can choose from three modes to interact with Muse in real time: Voice-only mode, placing the avatar beside the conversation or in full screen. The full-screen mode allows talking with the model in a virtual face-to-face setting. While Meta has not clarified in its blog post, it remains unclear whether the company will achieve this by processing the conversations through the cloud to render results or rely on voice -based processing.

Meanwhile, Meta noted that users can choose from hundreds of voices based on their preferences, and the agent uses Meta’s Muse Realtime Avatar and Realtime Voice technology for these conversations.

Muse Realtime Avatar availability

Meta says the voice and expressive avatars are rolling out for Muse app users in the United States “to start”. The highlighted term suggests the feature will arrive in more regions soon. Voice conversations for AI Glasses and Muse Charm are also coming soon.
