Apple reportedly working on ‘Smart Home’ automation technology

Apple may unveil the new home automation features in the next version of iOS at WWDC next week.

Apple is reportedly planning to unveil its new smart home platform software that will allow an iPhone to control security systems, home lighting and other appliances at its upcoming WWDC developer conference on June 2.

According to The Financial Times, Apple is working on a new software platform that would “turn the iPhone into a remote control for lights, security systems and other household appliances.” The report states that Apple’s solution will also include common automation features that are currently found in many similar offerings that are already on the market. For example, you could set the system to automatically turn on the lights when a user gets home and their iPhone is detected.

The report adds that Apple is already in secret talks with a number of device manufacturers to produce a range of smart home products that will work with iPhones, iPads, and other Apple devices.

Apart from Apple, other major companies have launched products for ‘Smart Homes’ like the Philips’ Hue WiFi connected light bulbs, and the Nest thermostat. Google acquired smart home appliances Nest Labs for $3.2 billion. The company offers smart products like Nest Learning Thermostat and a Protect (Smoke CO Alarm).

Samsung also unveiled its ‘Smart Home’ service at the CES 2014 event that offers a single integrated platform to connect and manage your Smart TVs, home appliances and other devices. The Samsung Smart Home service enable users to control their home devices via a single application and offers three main services including Device Control, Home view as well as Smart Customer service. The service will connect all Home and personal Samsung devices including Smart TVs, washing machines, refrigerators to digital cameras, smartphones and its Galaxy Gear smartwatch.
