Samsung Galaxy Watch 9 vs Galaxy Watch 8: specs, price and is the upgrade worth it?

Samsung announced the Galaxy Watch 9 at Galaxy Unpacked this week alongside the Galaxy Z Fold 8 lineup and the Watch Ultra 2. The Watch 9 uses the same squircle design as the Watch 8, carries the same display and maintains the same durability ratings. The changes include a new Qualcomm processor that replaces Samsung’s Exynos chip, the batteries are larger, Bluetooth steps up to version 6.0 and a third colour has been revealed. If you confused deciding between the Galaxy Watch 9 and Watch 8, the question is whether the internal upgrades and new health features are worth the price difference.

Galaxy Watch 9 vs Watch 8 India Price

The Galaxy Watch 9 launches in India at Rs 38,999 for the Bluetooth 40mm variant. Pre-order benefits include an Rs 1,000 cashback, a 60-day Strava trial and a two-month iFIT trial. General availability begins on 7 August. The Galaxy Watch 8 remains available from retailers at its existing price of Rs 35,999, which has seen periodic discounts since its launch.

Design and display

The Galaxy Watch 9 and Watch 8 share identical external dimensions. The 44mm variant of both measures 46 x 43.7 x 8.6 mm and weighs 34 g. The 40mm Watch 9 weighs 31.5 g, 1.5 g more than the Watch 8’s 30 g at the same size. Both use an Armor Aluminum 2 frame with Sapphire Crystal glass, carry IP68 and 5ATM water resistance, and are certified to MIL-STD-810H for durability. The Watch 9 adds Cream as a colour option for the 40mm variant; the Watch 8 launched only in Graphite and Silver.

The display remains unchanged between generations. The 44mm Watch 9 has a 1.47-inch Super AMOLED panel at 480 x 480 pixels with up to 3,000 nits peak brightness. The 40mm Watch 9 has a 1.34-inch display. Both match the Watch 8’s specifications exactly on this front, including the Sapphire Crystal protection and Always-On Display support.

Performance

The Watch 9 moves to Qualcomm’s Snapdragon SDW6100 Wear Elite, also built on a 3nm process, with a penta-core configuration clocked at 1x 2.1 GHz and 4x 1.95 GHz. This is the headline change for the Watch 9. The Watch 8 runs on Samsung’s Exynos W1000, a 3nm penta-core chip. The Snapdragon Wear Elite chip includes an NPU rated at 10 TOPS capable of handling 2 billion-parameter AI models on-device. This is what enables Gemini Live support and the new AI-powered health insights on the Watch 9. The Watch 8 cannot run Gemini Live locally. Both watches ship with 2 GB of RAM and 32 GB of storage.

Battery and charging

The Watch 9’s battery has received upgrades across both sizes. The 40mm Watch 9 has a 390 mAh cell versus the Watch 8’s 325 mAh, which is a 65 mAh increase. The 44mm Watch 9 has 445 mAh versus 435 mAh on the Watch 8 and is a more incremental upgrade. Samsung quotes up to 30 hours of runtime with Always-On Display enabled for the Watch 9. Both support 10W wireless charging support.

Health and fitness features

Both watches use the same Samsung BioActive sensor, which monitors optical heart rate, electrical heart signal (ECG) and bioelectrical impedance for body composition. Both support blood pressure monitoring, SpO2, skin temperature, antioxidant index and sleep tracking including Sleep Apnea detection with FDA clearance.

The Watch 9 adds several new health features made possible by the Snapdragon NPU including a Heart Health Score for cardiovascular wellness tracking with personalised recommendations, Daily Cardio Load for workout volume and recovery guidance, Fitness Index for overall physical fitness assessment, and Hearing monitoring that tracks noise exposure levels. These are not available on the Watch 8.

Software

The Watch 9 launches with Wear OS 7 and One UI Watch 9. The Watch 8 runs Wear OS 6 and One UI 8 Watch. The Wear OS 7 update brings updated Gemini integration, deeper AI features and the improved health monitoring capabilities listed above. Meanwhile, the Watch 8 has a four-year software support cycle will receive OS upgrades and major One UI updates through to 2029.

Verdict

The Galaxy Watch 9 is a more capable watch than the Watch 8 in some specific ways.This includes a faster on-device AI processing, a larger battery in the 40mm size, newer Bluetooth and additional health features. The design is unchanged, so anyone happy with how the Watch 8 looks and sits on the wrist will feel at home with the Watch 9 immediately.

Whether the Watch 9 is worth buying over the Watch 8 at its current price depends on two things: how much the new health features matter to you, and what price the Watch 8 can be had at. If Heart Health Score, Daily Cardio Load and Gemini Live are features you will actually use, the Watch 9 makes a clear case for itself. If you charge your watch nightly regardless and the Watch 8’s existing health tracking covers your needs, it remains a capable, well-built smartwatch available at a lower price.
