Tensor G6 vs Tensor G5: How much faster is the new Pixel 11 chip?

I have never thought of the Tensor chipset as Google’s answer to Qualcomm in a spec-sheet battle. The Pixel 10 Pro Fold, for example — a phone I used for a solid couple of months — could feel wonderfully quick in normal use while still falling behind a Snapdragon-powered Galaxy Z Fold 8 in sustained gaming. With Tensor G6, I think Google is kind of finally addressing the parts of the experience I notice every day: heat, battery drain, app loading, connectivity, and on-device AI. The move to TSMC’s 2nm process, a new seven-core CPU, MediaTek’s M90 modem, and a much faster TPU all sound impressive. What matters is how those changes feel in my hand when I eventually get to daily drive the Pixel 11.

A more efficient Tensor under the hood

The biggest change is the move from TSMC’s 3nm process on Tensor G5 to 2nm for Tensor G6. I don’t expect the smaller fabrication process alone to suddenly make the Pixel 11 feel twice as fast. The real benefit should be efficiency. In simple terms, Tensor G6 should be able to deliver similar levels of performance while using less power, which could also help with heat. That matters in everyday use. For instance, if I am using Google Maps on my commute, streaming music, checking WhatsApp, and jumping between apps, I want the phone to stay cool and avoid draining the battery faster than it needs to.

Google is also cutting the CPU from eight cores to seven. G5 used a Cortex-based design, while G6 switches to Arm’s C1 family: one C1 Ultra at 4.11GHz, four C1 Pro cores at 3.38 GHz, and two C1 Pro cores at 2.65GHz. Google says this delivers 20 per cent better power efficiency, 25 per cent faster web browsing, and 15 per cent quicker app loading. In practice, I would expect the biggest difference when switching between apps, opening a heavy website, or editing a photo, rather than staring at a benchmark number.

The modem change could be even more important. Tensor G5 used Samsung’s Exynos modem, while Tensor G6 moves to MediaTek’s M90 5G modem. I have always found modem efficiency more meaningful than a few extra CPU points. Simply put, on a long 5G commute, a cooler modem can help the whole phone stay cooler and preserve battery. If Tensor G6 also fixes the signal and thermal behaviour that has frustrated some Pixel users in the past, that will be a huge win.

Tensor G6 doubles down on AI and cameras

Then there is AI, which is still where Tensor has its clearest advantage. Google says the G6 TPU is 50 per cent more powerful and gets double the memory bandwidth, while Gemini Nano can run 3.5 times faster and use 3.5 times less energy. I would take those figures with some caution until I have actually used the Pixel 11, but the direction makes sense. More TPU power should mean that tasks such as summarising text, editing images, and running Gemini features locally take less time and less power. And because these tasks can happen on the phone itself, I won’t always need a strong internet connection to use them.

The ISP gets a serious makeover too. Tensor G6 enables 4K Portrait Video, makes Instant Night Sight 4.5 times faster, and pushes Pro Zoom to 120x. The Pixel 11 Pro Fold is the odd one out, though, missing 4K Portrait Video and Instant Night Sight because of its internal design.

But gaming is still the catch

Gaming is where I remain cautious. Tensor G6 uses the custom PowerVR CXTP-48-1536 GPU, and reported OpenCL performance is roughly 80 per cent higher. That sounds great until I actually play Genshin Impact on this thing for a straight 30 minutes. I still expect Snapdragon 8 Elite phones, including something like the Galaxy S26 Ultra or even the Galaxy Z Fold 8, to pull ahead in sustained gaming.

So, if you ask me, I see the Tensor G6 chip as a refinement that finally targets Tensor’s old weaknesses. Quite honestly, I would not buy a Pixel 11 expecting it to match the S26 Ultra or iPhone 17 Pro in raw performance. That has never really been the point of Tensor. What I would want from Tensor G6 is a phone that runs cooler, manages 5G more efficiently, handles local AI faster, and gets me through everyday tasks without wasting power. For a Pixel, that feels like the more useful upgrade.
