Lenovo Vibe X: What makes it special

HIGHLIGHTS

There are slim and light phones, and then there is this - the Lenovo Vibe X. The Vibe X is most certainly one of the best designed Android smartphones in recent times. Here's what makes the Lenovo Vibe X a very unique Android smartphone.

There are slim and light phones, and then there is this – the Lenovo Vibe X. Right from the first sight, the Lenovo Vibe X stands out from the rest of the mobile phones, thanks to its unique design, super slim profile and focus on ergonomics. The spec sheet numbers denoting the dimensions further reassure the design philosophy, the Vibe X measures only 6.9 mm in thickness. And at just 121 grams, with those dimensions, it perhaps rightly seems unreal that Lenovo managed to fit a 5-inch screen in this.

Right from the smart and rather edgy packing, the Vibe X starts to impress. The rounded edges and the laser etched finish to the exterior give the phone a rather polished in-hand feel and the black and silver combination finish brings a dash of premium-ness. The 6.9mm slimness is a job well done in itself, but the beveled spines give you the impression that it is even thinner. Side by side with the likes of the Apple iPhone 5 and the HTC One, and you know that Lenovo’s design team has pulled off something akin to a coup.

Lenovo sacrificed the aluminum finish for a polycarbonate plastic shell, either in a silver or titanium black textured finish. The silver finish on the back particularly looks very different and since it isn’t overtly shiny, can appeal to a wider demographic of users. And the polycarbonate is the reason why a 5-inch screen size phone weighs what a 4-inch screen phone would. And this makes the Vibe X extremely light. Add the hard work that has gone into making the phone slim, and what you get is what could potentially be a massive 5-inch phone which is in reality a rather comfortable to hold and use 5-inch phone!

The specifications are not to be taken lightly. The Vibe X packs in a quad-core 1.5GHz MTK processor with 2GB of RAM and runs Android 4.2 out of the box. The 5-inch IPS screen has a 1920 x 1080 pixel resolution and a rated density of 440ppi. Lenovo says this is the 20/20 vision, pretty much like how Apple treats the Retina display on the iPhone, and offers excellent text crispness and extremely accurate colour reproduction. IPS itself has a massive advantage over the rival display technologies in terms of how good the colour looks on the screen, and also a slight boost with better viewing angles. This screen gets the Gorilla Glass 3 protection as well. The curved glass is supposed to reduce reflections that tend to have a rather annoying presence on most smartphone screens in most usage environments. Battery requirements have been given a generous helping as well, with a 2000mAh battery.

As far as the user interface goes, Lenovo has switched things around in a major way. This particular UI is referred to as the Smart UI. Rather than having to tap on the app drawer icon and then searching for the list laid out either vertically or horizontally, the Vibe X gets a UI that removes that extra step. Swipe right and left on the home screens, and that is where all the apps and widgets are. We find this extremely convenient, and the list order can be customized and folders can be created.

The Vibe X comes with 16GB of internal memory, but no microSD slot for expansion. The two snappers on the phone should delight those who plan on using the Vibe X for photography. The rear camera is 13MP with the BSI sensor, while the front camera is 5MP. For the latter, the norm with most phones is 2MP, and this could possibly mean that the Vibe X might be the perfect phone for taking a selfie, or for Skype calls to friends and family!
