Analysis: Sony Xperia Z3 and Z3 Compact design elements and rugged features

HIGHLIGHTS

The Sony Xperia Z3 and Z3 Compact offer dust-proof and waterproof certification in a great looking design. We take a close look at the build and design of the latest premium smartphone offerings from Sony

Sony has adopted a new strategy where it said that it will be launching flagship smartphones every six months and last month it launched the Xperia Z3 along with new flagship mini device, the Xperia Z3 Compact. These two smartphones are currently Sony's most premium devices available in India

The Xperia Z3 comes with Sony’s OmniBalance design with tempered glass and rounded aluminium frame and edges. Coming from its predecessor, the new Z3 feels lighter, slimmer and much more refined. The design and the materials used ,certainly make the smartphone a premium flagship device.

Measuring at 5.2-inches, the IPS display comes with a full HD resolution along with Sony’s patented Triluminos display for mobile, Live colour LED and X-Reality for Mobile technologies. Sony Xperia Z3 has a very sharp and bright display, rated at 600 nits, the Xperia Z3 boasts of brightest display around when cranked to maximum brightness levels. The quality of the display is great and offers rich yet subtle colours rather than going for high colour saturation. The bezels have been trimmed and are fairly thin although there is a fair amount of space right above and below the display to accommodate the dual-stereo speakers. For a 5.2 inch device, the Xperia Z3 feels premium and well balanced. It isn't particulalrly heavy inspite of the glass back panel and the metal frame.

The back has a tampered glass finish and gives a nice premium touch to the smartphone

The 5.2-inch display is sharp and comes with brightness levels of upto 600-nits

The new protective flaps are now more sturdy and have a better finish

The curved edges give a good feel to the smartphone and Sony yet again maintains its OmniBalance design

The aluminum frame is now more curved and even the flaps protecting the slots and ports have been improved and blend in well with the rest of the frame.

Overall, there are some minor but important changes and upgrades on the Z3 if you compare it to the the Z2. Sony is smartly improving on its smartphones by adopting the six-month upgrade policy.

Along with the Z3 we saw a brand new flagship in the mini category. The Z1 Compact was the best mini smartphone, and now finally it has a successor. The Z3 Compact comes with exactly the same size and form factor as the Z1 Compact, but now we have a larger display which measures at 4.6-inches with a 720p resolution. This, just like the Z3, features all of Sony’s mobile display technologies. Since the size of the smartphone is same as the Z1 Compact, there has been some major trimming of the bezels, but still enough space for dual stereo speakers just like the Z3. Sony has replaced the metal frame which was seen on Z1 Compact with a plastic translucent polycarbonate frame. While the metal frame did give the predecessor a sense of premium finish, the new polycarbonate frame on the Z3 Compact doesn't take away any of the charm. It is rather a good thing as you don't have to worry about having scuffs and scratches.

The flaps covering the ports and slots have been revamped for a better fit

Omitting the metal frame, Sony has now put a polycarbonate frame on the Z3 Compact

Sony Xperia Z3 and the Xperia Z3 Compact both come with IP68 certification which is an upgrade from its predecessors. This means the smartphones can now withstand water upto 1.5m (previous versions were rated at 1m of water level resistance) for 30 minutes and is also dustproof. This makes it convenient for users who like using their smartphone all the time, whether its raining or when they are hiking. You can also be adventurous and take these smartphones into a pool for some amazing underwater photography. While being rugged and certified to handle dust and water, The fact that the Xperia Z3 and Z3 compact still manage to look and feel premium is a good achievement by Sony.

Thanks to the IP68 certification, the Xperia Z3 and Z3 Compact can withstand dust and water with ease
