Portable AC vs tower air cooler vs desert air cooler: From price to power consumption, every key factor compared

Summer cooling options are no longer limited to traditional ACs. Today, buyers can choose between portable ACs, tower air coolers and desert air coolers as well. All three of these appliances help you stay cool, but they work in very different ways. A portable AC uses a compressor and refrigerant to cool the air, just like a regular AC. Tower and desert air coolers use water-based evaporative cooling, making them much cheaper to buy and run. Before spending your money, it is important to understand how these cooling appliances differ in terms of price, electricity use, maintenance and performance. Here is a simple comparison to help you choose the right option for your home.

Portable AC vs tower air cooler vs desert air cooler: Cooling method and performance

A portable AC provides powerful cooling using a compressor and refrigerant. It also removes excess moisture from the air, which makes it a good choice for hot and humid places. On the other hand, tower and desert air coolers use the water evaporation method to cool the air. They work best in hot and dry climates. These coolers increase humidity in the room.

Portable AC vs tower air cooler vs desert air cooler: Price and electricity consumption

Portable ACs are the most expensive option. They usually cost between Rs 25,000 and Rs 50,000 or more. They also consume the most electricity, with power usage between 900W and 1,500W.

Tower air coolers are usually priced between Rs 5,000 and Rs 12,000. They use only 50W to 150W of power. On the other hand, desert air coolers cost around Rs 6,000 to Rs 15,000 and consume 150W to 250W of electricity.

Portable AC vs tower air cooler vs desert air cooler: Maintenance and everyday use

Portable ACs need very little maintenance. You may only have to empty the water collection tray occasionally. However, they require an exhaust pipe that has to be connected to a window or wall opening.

Air coolers need regular care. Their water tanks must be refilled, and the cooling pads should be cleaned to prevent dirt and mold. They also need fresh air, so keeping a window slightly open improves their performance.

A portable AC is the right choice if you live in a hot and humid area and want strong cooling without permanent installation. A tower air cooler is ideal for small bedrooms in hot and dry regions. It saves space, uses very little electricity and is budget-friendly. You can go for a desert air cooler for large rooms or semi-open spaces in dry climates. It provides better airflow than a tower cooler.
