Xbox Series X vs PS5: Which console you should get for GTA 6

Grand Theft Auto 6 will release on November 19, 2026, for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S on the same day. It’s neither exclusive to a single console, nor is there any timed exclusivity. So, if you already own one of the consoles, that should settle it for you. But, if you’re in that camp of many who plan on purchasing a new console based on their anticipation of Grand Theft Auto 6, then the decision-making process is not about Grand Theft Auto 6 anymore. Let’s have a look at the facts.

It has been made clear from Rockstar that there are two exact launch platforms, the PS5 and the Xbox Series X/S. No PC launch is available yet (expected after 12-18 months following GTA 5’s example), nor any backwards compatible ports, no exclusivity period for either of them. Both use the same AMD Zen 2/RDNA2 platform and since it is a Rockstar game optimized for both of the platforms, expect the difference to be limited to minute changes in resolution and framerate.
So, if GTA 6 is the only reason for buying a console, put the specs away and read on.
Exclusives
This is where the two consoles really start to differ. The games made by Sony via this console are amazing – God of War Ragnarök, Spider-Man 2, Horizon Forbidden West, Ghost of Yotei, and future God of War: Laufey and Marvel’s. The list of exclusives from Microsoft has become noticeably shorter compared to before, and even more ironic is that some of their former flagship games can now be found on the PlayStation console. This means that there is no reason to buy an Xbox just for the exclusives.
Subscription
The response from Microsoft lies in subscription value. Game Pass Ultimate presents you with a revolving selection of games that includes first party games available on release day, as well as a significant number of third-party games all for one monthly subscription price. If your video game tastes are broad, but not deep, then a few big titles each year compared to scores of games that you would never purchase individually, Game Pass is a tough economic proposition to beat.
Hardware
On paper, Series X comes out ahead of PS5 when it comes to the GPU teraflops and memory bandwidth. In reality, however, the faster storage drive and greater GPU clock rate used by Sony have made up most of this difference since 2020, and even in 2026, load times, resolutions, and frames per second will come pretty close on most multi-platform games, including any reasonable expectations for GTA 6.
Controller
The DualSense’s haptic feedback and adaptive triggers get more consistent, thoughtful use from developers than the Xbox controller’s more conventional rumble motors. Rockstar leaned into these features well in GTA 5’s PS5 re-release, and there’s reason to expect GTA 6 to do the same. It’s a soft factor, but if you’re on the fence, it nudges toward PS5.
The Indian reality
Availability, not specifications, is the key here. Xbox Series X has had stock issues in India for many years now, and Microsoft hasn’t even brought the Digital Only version of the Series X or the 2TB edition to India. If you want an Xbox now in India, the choices you have are fewer than what you should have for a console that’s five years old.
There is no PS5 Pro available in India. That means, the Sony hardware offering that you can go for to make sure that your choice will not be obsolete soon is not there for you right now.
Pricing has changed, and definitely not for the better. Since Sony increased the global prices for their consoles in 2026, the MRPs for PS5 disc editions in India are ₹54,990, with festive sales like Amazon Great Indian Festival, Flipkart Big Billion Days, etc. making the street price ₹49,990. The Digital Edition comes at ₹44,990. Meanwhile, the Xbox Series X in India sells in the range of ₹50,000-₹56,000.
Put plainly: PS5 is the console you can reliably walk into a store or click “buy” on right now. Xbox Series X in India is a console you might have to hunt for.
The verdict
If you plan to purchase only for playing GTA 6 right from day one, both consoles will serve your purpose equally well. The choice comes down to everything else:
- Go for the PS5 if you are after a more comprehensive exclusive game catalog, better controller support, and a console that is actually available in India at a known price point.
- Go for the Xbox Series X if you are leaning towards the value provided by Game Pass rather than a few exclusives, and you don’t mind some difficulties with acquiring it in India.
To be honest, it is this very availability issue that is the reason why the PS5 is recommended as the go-to choice for most Indians ahead of the GTA 6 release.
