Earlier this year, Sony’s State of Play got a lot of praise from gamers around the world because of all the announcements that were made during the event. Honestly, not a lot of people were expecting Sony to drop the God of War Trilogy remake, which made the showcase exciting. But well, it looks like Sony isn’t stopping there, as they’ve got even more in store for gamers.
The latest showcase, which ran for over 60 minutes, came loaded with reveals, release dates, and a lot of genuine surprises. The showcase opened with a fresh look at Marvel’s Wolverine and closed with the biggest announcement of the night, a new chapter in the God of War universe. Without wasting much time, let’s check out every major announcement you need to know about.
First and foremost, and probably the most exciting announcement of the bunch, comes from Santa Monica. The studio most known for its work on the God of War franchise had a surprise for its fans. They revealed God of War: Laufey, which centres around Faye. If you’ve played the previous two God of War games, I’m sure you’ve heard of that name a lot of times.
Well, in case you haven’t, you should play them first. But nonetheless, Faye is Kratos’ late wife, and in the game, she is navigating the afterlife of the gods after her death. Combat footage shown during the State of Play leaned into magic and fluid movement, giving Laufey a personality and fighting style distinctly her own. I was definitely not expecting Hughie from ‘The Boys’ (aka Jack Quaid) to be playing the role of a cube companion in the game.

Insomniac Games weren’t behind in revealing new details on their games as well. They opened up the show with a new look at Marvel’s Wolverine, which launches September 15. The new game footage showcases Logan alongside Jean Grey, tearing through the mutant-hunting Reavers. The action was brutal and very satisfying. New details on the mutant task force Team X were also revealed. Pre-orders for the game are now live.
If you’re a fan of horror games, I’m sure you’ve played or at least heard of Until Dawn. It’s one of the scariest games released for the PS4. And continuing the legacy of the first game, the developers, Firesprite Games, are now bringing a standalone sequel. It features a new crew of ghost hunters heading to an abandoned tropical island for a TV debut. Thankfully, no connection to the original story is required to jump in, so new players will have no issues.
Coming to some of the third-party releases now, Remedy Entertainment has confirmed that their upcoming and awaited game, Control Resonant, will launch on September 24 on PS5. The new story trailer showed protagonist Dylan navigating a paranatural Manhattan where architecture bends, and realities shift. His shapeshifting weapon, the Aberrant, plays a key role in combat. Jesse Faden from the original game also makes a return, which has gotten fans excited.
Along with the Control sequel, Konami and Screen Burn Interactive have also locked in a launch date for Silent Hill Townfall, and it’s coming out on September 24. The game features a completely new character. The gameplay trailer introduced Zoe, a resident of St Amelia whom the protagonist Simon first contacts through his CRTV device. Along with that, a terrifying new creature stalking Simon in the Otherworld was also shown off in the trailer.

After a great run with Resident Evil 9 and Pragmata this year, Capcom is finally putting more focus towards some of its other franchises as well. This time around, we are seeing the return of the supernatural samurai title, Onimusha: Way of the Sword, which comes out on September 25. Along with a new look of the game, the developers have also announced a playable demo, which features roughly 30 minutes of early story and hands-on time with the game’s mechanics.
Another major announcement comes from Crystal Dynamics and Flying Wild Hog, as the return to Lara Croft’s origins finally has a release date. The developers have announced that the game comes out on February 12, 2027. Along with the announcement, the developers also released a new trailer that includes gameplay from the iconic Peru Lost Valley and confirmed the return of familiar faces.
Aside from all the aforementioned announcements, there were some other announcements as well. First off, Dune Awakening is coming out on the PS5 on September 22. It brings a single-player mode and a new story chapter; the developers are calling it the definitive version of the game.
Moving on, if you’re a fan of Dave the Diver like me, you’d be interested to know that there’s a new game coming out called Bancho the Chef. Interestingly, it is a standalone prequel to the game, and it blends cooking sim with globe-trotting RPG. Meanwhile, the much-awaited Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve is ready to take off on October 2.
For all the Rayman fans out there, there’s finally a new game, and it comes in the form of Legends Retold. It is a 3D reimagining of the multiplayer platformer, and it releases on October 1. Along with that, the game No Rest for the Wicked from Moon Studios is making its way to the PS5 in October with over 100 hours of content and a new class system.
If you’re into horror games, the reveal of ILL, a first-person action horror, will definitely get you excited. The game is being made by a team including former Alien Isolation developers, so it’s definitely going to be scary. While the release date hasn’t been announced, it’s due on PS5 in 2027. Last but not least, Marvel’s Marathon also announced Season 2, going live alongside an Open Play Week running until June 9, requiring no PlayStation Plus membership.
It’s safe to say that this year’s State of Play has been very packed with a lot of fun and exciting games. Fan reactions on X indicate that the response towards the event has been extremely positive. Personally, I really enjoyed it. I’m very excited to check out the latest spin-off game from Santa Monica, God of War: Laufey.
