Days Gone: 10 tips on surviving in the Freaker infested open world
HIGHLIGHTS

Days Gone is an open work zombie survival game.

It is developed by Bend Studios and is exclusively available on the PS4.

We list 10 tips that can help you survive the Freaker infestation.

Days Gone is the newest addition to the PlayStation 4 exclusive lineup of games and even though it isn't up to the level of God of War (read our review here) or Marvel’s Spider-Man (read our review here), it is an enjoyable experience as far as gameplay is concerned. The open world is filled with zombies called Freakers who can make your life in the game a living nightmare. To help you prepare yourself for this adventure, we list 10 tips that you should resort to if you wish to survive the world of Days Gone.

Each camp has its own credit system

Throughout your journey in Days Gone, you will come across a number of camps and settlements. Each camp will give you story quests and side quests. Completing these quests will help you earn credit and increase your trust level with the camp. But remember, trust and credit earned with a camp cannot be used in another. So remember to go to the armoury and garage too see what equipment is available and take on missions accordingly. For example, one camp has some great gear for the bike and the other has a great selection of guns you can buy. Chose the missions you take wisely as it will help you unlock the gear on offer in each camp.

Guns and ammo

You can carry one primary weapon, one secondary weapon and one special weapon. Even though you will find ammo in the field, it is scarce. There are no “one ammo fits all” easily available. So if you are running low on ammo in a firefight, it is okay to pick up a gun that a foe drops. You can always return to a camp and access your locker to use your favourite guns once again. The scarcity of ammo and push to change guns really helps add a sense of urgency in a firefight.

Keep an eye on the gas tank and bike health

Your primary mode of transport in the game is your beloved bike. Like a bike in the real world, you will need to top up the gas tank every once in a while. You can do this by stopping at a gas station or finding gas cans throughout the game world. If you run out of gas and are close to a camp, you can pay the camp garage to retrieve your bike as well.

Your bike sustains damage throughout the game and you need to repair it. You can use “scrap” scattered throughout the world or use the garage at camps to repair your bike. Remember, the more damage your bike takes, the more sluggish it will perform.

Upgrade your bike

When you start the game you have a fully pimped out bike. But you soon lose it and start out with a basic bike that needs to be upgraded. The customisation options in the game are plentiful, but we say upgrade the bike strategically. For example, a bigger gas tank means less refuelling, a better silencer means less noise. You can also carry a complete ammo pack on your bike so you don't fall short of bullets during a firefight. Unlocking NOS is great for clearing some of the chase sequences with ease on the bike.

Stealth is usually the best option

You can also purchase suppressors for your weapon in the game. Suppressors have a short life so only equip them when you are taking on a mission in stealth. Suppressors for ranged weapons like the sniper rifle are great for taking out a camp of people without giving away your location. A suppressed weapon also ensures the zombie creatures called freaks aren't attracted to your position.

Bring on the hoard if the fight is too tough

A technical marvel in the game is the hoard that you take on. At one point, there will be a hoard of 500 Freakers chasing you. There are smaller hoards scattered throughout the game. These Hoards are located in certain areas of the map. If a firefight at a bandit camp gets too tough, you may want to consider bringing the hoard along with you. Navigating a hoard towards a bandit camp to get the camp run over. The hoard may linger for a bit after the firefight but will eventually return to their original resting place.

Use strategy to take on the hoard

You may be able to use the Hoard to your advantage, but there are times when you will have to take on a Hoard head on. You need to be prepared for this. First, stock up on projectiles like Molotov cocktails, grenades and more. Secondly, lay down traps like mines, bear traps, and more. Third, ensure your special weapon is not a sniper rifle, but a large machine gun. Fourth, strategically place your bike so that if you need to make a quick getaway, you can. You can kill half the hoard, escape for a bit and come back and take out the rest. This will help you restock your ammo and traps to take out the rest of the Hoard.

Another tip is that you can divert the hoard through narrow spaces. This helps you funnel them ensuring you can take many of them out with your machine gun.

Live to fight another day

This is self-explanatory but let's say it again. If the Hoard comes after you and you aren't prepared, run like hell!

Nero bases are important

There are a number of Nero bases scattered throughout the map and you can visit these abandoned bases to unlock upgrades for your health, stamina and focus. However, once you have supplied power to the Nero base, a bunch of speakers come on and attract the hoard. Before you fire up the generator at the Nero base, ensure you have disabled all the speakers. This will ensure you don’t have to deal with the hoard while looking for the upgrade. One more tip is that you can switch on the generator one a second or 2 to identify the location of the speakers and then switch the generator off before it attracts the hoard.

Use the day and night cycle strategically in the game

The game has a day-night cycle along with changing weather. This affects the presence of the Freakers on the map. For example in the night, the Freakers have a higher presence across the map and in the day, they go back into their nest. While invading a bandit camp, it is easier to sneak into it in the night than in the day. Use the day-night cycle to your advantage when tackling a mission. Some missions are designed for a specific time of day but for the others, you can go back to your camp to sleep to change the time of day.

Bandit camps

The map is littered with bandit camps and like any good open world game, the bandit camp has a map that you can acquire. This map has some vital information like the location of Nero camps, the exact location of Freaker nests and other key locations that you can visit.

With these 10 tips, you are equipped to take on the hoards of Freakers, bandits and ensure you get the right upgrades to take to the vast open world.
