A Great Year in 2017
2017 was another great year for Out of the Box Network Developers. We have grown to a community of over 2,500 SDN/NFV developers worldwide. Starting from just one meet-up in Santa Clara, we now have meet-up groups in Bangalore, Dublin, Portland, Oregon, and Chandler, Arizona. We want to begin 2018 by thanking all of you who have participated in Out of the Box Network Developer meet-ups.

One of our major accomplishments in 2017 was the Intel® NFV Next Virtual Conference. This online conference had 22 sessions across three tracks—VNF, 5G, and platform optimization—led by Industry leaders from the Open Network Foundation, Ericsson*, Red Hat*, Huawei*, and Citrix*. Out of the Box Network Developers
Santa Clara
The first meet up in 2018 will be in Santa Clara. Here we’ll turn the tables and let you tell us about your latest projects. SDN/NFV Developer Day & Lightening Talks is planned for January 24. We will host a panel of business gurus from the industry to discuss what network developers should keep in mind when developing a project to take to market. Panelists include Lakshmi Sharma, Robert Starmer, and Sanjit Dang. Developers will share their projects to get input and feedback from the panelists and attendees as well. To kick off the meet up, there will be a hands-on lab where developers will learn about the faster, easier and more user-friendly “new DPDK”. Bangalore
Out of the Box Network Developers Bangalore will hold a DPDK Summit in March. The Linux Foundation and Intel will host this two-day event. It’s still early in the planning stages, but you can get updates by checking the Out of the Box Network Developer Bangalore Meet Up page.

Intel hosted the fourth OPNFV Plugfest the week of December 4 in Portland, Oregon. At this milestone event, OPNFV users came together to improve the OPNFV platform through rigorous compatibility testing using a wide-range of user scenarios.

Intel Network Innovators have been busy sharing their knowledge and experience with others. We’d like to acknowledge and thank these Network Innovators for the time and effort spent sharing their expertise.
- Shohreh Ahvar presented a workshop—Tutorial #1: Fast Packet Processing Towards Scalable and Agile VNFs—at the IEEE Conference on Network Function Virtualization and Software Defined Networks.
- Eskil Steenberg was at Twitch Streaming.
- Marco Spaziani Brunella spoke the at RISC-V 7th Workshop.
- Shivaram Mysore trained developers on installation issues and methodologies for OVS with DPDK.
- A big welcome to Tuan Nguyen, a new network innovator. Tuan is a solutions architect for NFV/Telco, building solutions and innovations for VMware. Welcome, Tuan. We look forward to seeing you at future meet-ups.
New on Intel® Developer Zone
An Overview of Advanced Server-Based Networking Technologies – This guide is an overview of tools for advanced technologies in SDN and NFV. It covers DPDK, Open vSwitch, SR-IOV, Fd.io and VPP, and describes virtualization scenarios using one or more of the tools.

Get Started Using the DPDK Traffic Management API – This tutorial describes the new traffic management (TM) API in DPDK 17.08. Features include hierarchical scheduling, traffic shaping, congestion management, and packet marking. The TM API is a generic interface for QoS TM configuration of devices such NICs, NPUs, ASICs, and FPGAs. A typical DPDK function call sequence helps you get started using the API.
