China may soon make it difficult for companies and developers outside the country to use its most advanced artificial intelligence models. According to a Reuters report, Chinese officials have been meeting the country's top AI firms over the past month to discuss limiting overseas access to powerful AI systems, including models that are still under development. The proposal has not been approved yet, and there is no clarity on when or if it will come into effect. Still, the discussions show that Beijing now sees advanced AI as an important national asset. If the plan goes ahead, businesses and developers in countries like India and the US could lose access to some of China's best and most affordable AI models.

The meetings were led by China's Ministry of Commerce and included companies such as Alibaba, ByteDance and AI startup Z.ai. Officials discussed whether China's strongest AI models, including both closed and open weight models, should be kept away from overseas users. The reported plan is expected to focus mainly on future AI models instead of those that are already available.

The talks also covered stronger protection for AI technology. Officials discussed making the leak or theft of AI technology a crime under China's national security law. They also spoke about bringing in new rules on who can invest in Chinese AI startups. Another concern raised during the meetings was the ability of advanced AI models to find and exploit software weaknesses. Chinese authorities are also expected to hold discussions with legal experts on rules for open source AI.

While the report did not mention the exact models that could face restrictions, it is expected that, if the measures are implemented, Alibaba’s Qwen family of models, ByteDance’s Doubao, and Z.ai’s GLM-5.2 could come under scrutiny. DeepSeek, whose AI models have gained worldwide attention for delivering strong performance at lower costs, would be the first one to be curbed.

The move comes at a time when Chinese AI companies are becoming serious competitors to US firms. OriginOS 7 update: Launch timeline (Expected)

Although Vivo and iQOO have not revealed any information regarding when will users be able to enjoy the new OriginOS 7 update, the latest reports indicate that the stable version of the new operating system could become available in late October or in early November. Furthermore, it's also expected that the early testers will get the new update before the stable version with the beta software.

Nothing has finally introduced its Phone 4b in the Indian market. It is a new device aimed at younger buyers looking for the company's signature design language and software experience. Nothing Phone 4b price in India

Nothing has introduced the Phone 4b in two configurations:

Poco M8 Plus: Specs (Expected)

The Poco M8 Plus is also expected to feature similar specs to the Redmi Note 17, as it's rumoured that the device will house a 6.83-inch flat OLED panel. It's also reported that it will be clubbed with a 144Hz refresh rate and 1.5K resolution.

Rumours suggest that the handset may be powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 6s Gen 4 octa-core processor or the Snapdragon 6 Gen 5 chipset. Along with that, the leaks point to the smartphone possibly housing a massive 9,000mAh battery supported by 67W of fast charging.

Redmi Note 17 and Poco M8 Plus: Launch timeline and prices (Expected)

The Redmi Note 17 and Poco M8 Plus are expected to launch in India towards the end of 2026 or early 2027. Early reports suggest the Redmi Note 17 may cost around Rs 21,999, while the Poco M8 Plus could be priced at about Rs 15,999. However, these are just speculative prices and may change when the devices are officially launched.

Meta has said that four US states are seeking about USD $1.4 trillion in penalties in a lawsuit accusing the company of making Facebook and Instagram addictive for young users and misleading the public about their safety. The figure was revealed in a court filing made by Meta on Monday, reports Reuters. The company revealed the figure in its response to the attorneys general's filing on how penalties should be calculated if the states prevail at trial.

The lawsuit was filed by the states of California, Colorado, Kentucky and New Jersey. Meta has disagreed with the proposed penalty. The company argued that the amount has no legal basis and is not supported by the evidence. "A sanction of that size has no analog in the history of consumer protection enforcement," Meta said in the court filing.

The report comes at a time when Meta is also facing regulatory scrutiny in India over a new WhatsApp feature. Last week, the company announced WhatsApp usernames, a feature that will let people chat without sharing their phone numbers. 

Soon after the announcement, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) asked Meta to pause the rollout. The ministry also asked for an explanation on how the feature would prevent identity spoofing and online fraud. Officials are concerned that scammers can create usernames similar to those of real people, government offices or trusted organisations.

In response, WhatsApp has defended the feature, saying usernames will be optional and people will not be able to search for someone simply by entering a username. WhatsApp added that users will see safety information before replying to messages from unknown people. This will include the sender's country, whether the account is newly created and whether both users are members of any common groups. The company also said well-known names and their variations have been reserved to reduce impersonation.

Meta even met MeitY officials to explain the feature. The company has until July 9 to submit its detailed response to the government.

Apple is said to introduce both the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max during its annual September launch event, likely to take place on September 8 or September 9. The pre-orders are said to start in the same week and the sale may start on September 18.

According to the reports, the iPhone 18 Pro series may get Apple's next-generation A20 Pro chipset, built on TSMC's 2nm process. The devices are also tipped to feature 12GB RAM to support Apple Intelligence features.

Speaking of the front, Apple may offer OLED panels measuring 6.3 inches on the iPhone 18 Pro and 6.9 inches on the Pro Max. However, the Dynamic Island may get smaller. Camera upgrades are also rumoured, including a variable aperture main sensor that could offer improved low-light photography and greater control over depth effects.

After planning to reduce the storage space with Google accounts, the company is now planning to bring a change to how Android backups are stored. The company may slightly increase the amount of cloud storage used on your Google account. The company has started counting all Android backup data toward a user's Google Account storage quota instead of excluding certain backup categories as it did previously.

Until now, the only media that was stored in Google Photos and multimedia content within MMS backups contributed to user’s storage limit. Under the new policy, additional data such as SMS messages, call history, device settings, app data and other backup information will also be included in storage calculation.

As per Google, the impact is said to be minimal for most of the users. The company estimates that the average Android backup will grow by around 40MB once the new policy takes effect. However, the change is still important because it changes how backup storage is measured across Android devices.

Multiple reports suggest that the rollout has started for new Android users creating backups and the existing users will see the update arrive gradually over the coming months.

Additionally, the company has also introduced more detailed backup controls. The users will soon be able to decide exactly what information gets saved to their Google account. New toggles will allow users to include or exclude categories such as SMS and MMS messages, call logs and device settings. Existing controls for individual app data will remain available as well.

The company stated that these changes are designed to give users greater transparency into what is being stored in the cloud and how much space those backups consume. The updated settings can be accessed through the Google Backup section on Android devices, where users will be able to review backup data and adjust preferences based on their storage needs.

Earlier this year, reports suggested that Google had begun testing lower free storage limits for some newly created accounts. The company has also been encouraging users to upgrade to Google One plans as demand for cloud storage continues to grow.

The recent Xbox layoffs have affected several gaming studios, including Bethesda Game Studios. After the company announced the latest round of job cuts, the Bethesda Game Studios Union criticised Microsoft's leadership. The latest restructuring includes around 3,200 layoffs in the Xbox division planned throughout FY27. The union said employees are facing the consequences of decisions made by senior executives. In a statement shared on BlueSky, the union described the layoffs as "a stressful annual routine."

"In what is becoming a stressful annual routine, Microsoft has decided to lay off thousands, including MANY of us at Bethesda Games Studios," the union wrote. "With over 10k developers already cut from previous rounds, those at the top have deemed that insufficient in fixing their mistakes."

The union said many experienced employees have lost their jobs. According to the statement, several workers who have spent years, and in some cases decades, at Bethesda are among those affected. It also questioned the company's repeated cost-cutting measures, asking, "When will this cycle of cuts in pursuit of ever-greater profits end?"

Unlike many game developers, Bethesda employees have the support of a labour union. This gives them legal protections during the layoff process. Microsoft must negotiate with the union about how the layoffs will affect its members.

The Bethesda Game Studios Union said this will help it fight for better support for affected workers. It said, "Because of our One BGS union, we have the right to negotiate over the impacts of these layoffs, helping secure stronger severance packages and better support for those leaving the company. We will do everything we can to make sure our friends are properly taken care of."

Microsoft has warned employees that more changes are coming after announcing the latest round of job cuts. In a message sent to staff, EVP and Chief People Officer Amy Coleman said the company is changing the way it operates as technology and customer needs continue to evolve. She also confirmed that around 4,800 employees, or about 2.1 percent of Microsoft's global workforce, are being laid off. Coleman said the decision was difficult and thanked the affected employees for their contributions.

She explained that Microsoft is changing because the technology industry is changing quickly. According to Coleman, customer needs, business models and the way work is done are all evolving. 

"The 'why' is this: Our business is changing because the world around it is changing," Coleman said. "Companies don’t get to choose whether their industry changes; they only get to choose whether they change with it. That means we will need to adjust resources and roles and shift how we operate so we can have the greatest impact for our customers."

Coleman also addressed concerns about AI. She said the latest layoffs are not happening because AI is replacing employees. But, she said AI is changing how work gets done. Coleman warned that the restructuring is not over. "We are still early on this journey, and there will be more changes ahead; other parts of our business will need to make similar changes," she said.

Calling the move as ‘painful’, the new Xbox CEO then went on to give a clearer picture of what lies ahead for the console in future. Not only this, the email also mentioned how Xbox is now parting ways with four game studios including Compulsion Games, Double Fine Productions, Ninja Theory and Undead Labs. What will happen to the studios?

First thing’s first, the aforementioned studios will not be shut down. Two of them are going independent while the other two will have new owners. Here’s a detailed look at what lies ahead. 

Let’s first talk about Compulsion Games, which is best known for the game South of Midnight. The studio will go independent once again and the developer will retain its intellectual property, existing catalogue and enough runway to work on its next project outside Xbox. 

Walking down a similar path, Double Fine Productions is also returning to independent ownership. The studio, known for titles like Psychonauts 2, will continue operating independently with its IP and catalogue.

However, the story is different for Ninja Theory. Xbox says that the studio will be moving to a new ownership. The company added that funding is already in place to ensure work on the Senua franchise continues as planned.

Meanwhile, Undead Labs is also expected to move under new owners while continuing development of State of Decay 3. Xbox says the transition is being planned in a way that allows the studio to complete the game without disruption.

The email also briefly mentioned Arkane. However, unlike the other four studios, no final decision has been made. Xbox said Arkane's management in France has started the required consultation process to explore different strategic options, meaning its future is still under review.

The reason behind Xbox restructuring

In the same email, Sharma explained that Xbox's current business model is no longer sustainable. She said the company entered its current console generation with a smaller install base and higher operating costs than its competitors. While investments in Game Pass, multi platform publishing and a larger portfolio of studios created value, they did not grow at the pace Xbox had expected.

The company also admitted that owning a large number of studios has become increasingly difficult as the gaming industry continues to grow. Sharma noted that Xbox now competes not only with major publishers but also with thousands of successful independent developers, making it impractical to own every promising studio.

Despite the restructuring, Xbox says none of its publicly announced first party games have been cancelled. The company also plans to continue investing in gaming, but with a stronger focus on efficiency, fewer management layers and projects that fit its long term strategy.

Finishing off the long email, Sharma wrote, ‘History is full of companies that mistake longevity for inevitability. We will not be one of them.’

Google has recently told the Delhi High Court that it cannot monitor YouTube or stop the re-upload of unauthorised recordings of court proceedings. The Mountain View-based tech giant argued that such a direction is neither legally sustainable nor practically possible. In an affidavit filed before the court, the company said YouTube functions only as an intermediary and does not create or control videos uploaded by users. It maintained that the platform can remove content only after specific videos are identified and declared unlawful by a competent court. The submission came in response to a public interest litigation seeking action against the circulation of videos from a recent Delhi High Court hearing involving former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.

Google vs Delhi High Court

Google recently filed an affidavit in response to a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by advocate Vaibhav Singh. The PIL was filed after videos of an April 13 court hearing before Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma were shared on social media. The hearing was about Arvind Kejriwal's request for the judge to step away from hearing the excise policy case.

Google told the court that many of the YouTube videos mentioned in the case had already been blocked in India or removed before the court passed its interim order. After the court's directions, the remaining videos were also blocked. Google also said that the petitioner has not reported any new video links since then.

Earlier, the Delhi High Court said that recording and sharing court proceedings without permission is a serious concern for the judiciary. The court directed online platforms to remove such content whenever specific links are brought to their attention.

YouTube cannot decide what is unlawful

Google told the Delhi High Court that videos of court hearings are recorded outside YouTube and uploaded by other users. It said it cannot tell if a video contains court proceedings, whether the recording was allowed by the court, or if it breaks any law. Google also said that rules for recording court proceedings are different in different courts across India.

The company said that examining millions of videos uploaded to YouTube to identify possible violations is practically impossible, and they can't do that. They further added that intermediaries cannot be expected to perform the role of deciding whether content is legal or illegal without a court order.

AI is growing at a rapid pace, and with that, it's also changing how people use technology. While there are certain benefits to that, it also has created new risks that current laws cannot fully address. Keeping these challenges in mind, the central government is planning to introduce new laws to prevent the misuse of AI on social media and in cyberspace. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology said existing rules cover some AI-related problems, but new issues continue to appear. The proposed law is meant to deal with problems caused by AI, such as deepfakes, online scams, privacy issues, copyright problems, and deciding who is responsible if an AI system causes harm.

Why the government wants a separate AI law

The Indian government feels that the existing laws were drafted to govern human behaviour and not how the AI will work. While these laws are capable of handling some problems arising from AI, they were never designed for it.

Explaining this, S. Krishnan, Secretary at the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, said that current legal provisions can address issues such as deepfakes and content labelling to some extent, but they are not enough to deal with the growing range of AI-related risks. Who is responsible for AI mistakes?

One of the major issues regarding AI is who should be liable in the case of an error made by the AI technology, as there are many AI technologies that operate as 'black boxes'. It's a situation when even their manufacturers cannot determine how they make a certain decision.

For example, if an AI-enabled medical robot conducts a surgery with an error or a self-driving car results in an accident, then no existing law in India specifies whether the manufacturer, the user, the company, or some other party should be held responsible for the damage caused.

Copyright and data need clear rules

The AI tools are no longer text-generating machines, as they can now generate images, songs, and novels and can even code complex programs. However, there are no legal regulations concerning the owners of such products because copyrights are only acknowledged by people.

Another problem is that there is massive use of copyrighted material available on the Internet for training AI systems without getting any permission. It is necessary to have legal provisions about what constitutes fair use and infringement of copyrights.

Other challenges

Along with the above-mentioned challenges, the government is also studying the impact of AI on the creation of deepfake videos and cloned voices, posing a danger of fraud and identity theft. WhatsApp is currently facing scrutiny in India over its upcoming username feature. At the same time, the messaging platform is testing a new green dot feature for users. Reports say the green dot will show whether a person is online, making it easier to know if they are active before opening a chat. The feature is currently being tested for iPhone users and is available only to selected beta testers through the latest WhatsApp beta for iOS update on Apple's TestFlight programme. It will replace the need to open a conversation to check the online status under a contact's name. Existing privacy settings will remain the same for all users.

What is WhatsApp's green dot?

WhatsApp has started rolling out a new green dot feature. Under this feature when a user is active, then a green dot appears under its profile photo. Furthermore, it will automatically disappear once the contact goes offline.

At the time of writing, WhatsApp has added the green dot indicator only to the Contact Info screen. Users can access this section by tapping on a person’s name or profile picture inside a chat.

The indicator is not available in the chat list or main conversation window right now. WhatsApp often tests new features in limited areas before bringing them to more sections of the app.

The feature is already available to certain users who are running WhatsApp beta for iOS version 26.26.10.72. Do note that the feature was earlier spotted on Android beta as well, and now it is being expanded to iPhone users for testing.

WhatsApp green dot: Privacy

WhatsApp will keep your current privacy settings. So, if you've hidden your online status from certain contacts or from everyone, the green dot will not appear on your profile picture for those people.

It's also important to know that the green dot does not reveal any new information. It is simply a new visual indicator that shows the same online status already available on WhatsApp.

Tipster Digital Chat Station recently posted on the social media platform Weibo and stated that the upcoming Xiaomi 18 Pro Max could feature a 6.9-inch 2K OLED panel. Apart from this, the tipster has further suggested that it might come with a flat display design along with large rounded corners and thin bezels on all sides. Along with the main screen, the device may also feature an AI-powered secondary rear screen up to 4 inches.

Under the hood, the smartphone is anticipated to draw its power from Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro chipset, which is said to be built on 2 nm technology. The device is also expected to feature up to 16GB of LPDDR5X RAM along with UFS 4.1 internal storage options that go up to 1TB.

Xiaomi 18 Pro Max: Launch timeline (Expected)

According to recent reports, the smartphone is expected to launch in the Chinese market in the fourth quarter (Q4) of this year. However, at the time of writing there has been no official announcement about the smartphone's entry into the Indian market.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has shared a personal moment while talking about the company's latest AI model. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Altman compared his child's first attempt at speaking two words together with one of GPT 5.6's achievements. For those unaware, OpenAI introduced the GPT 5.6 family of AI models late last month. The new lineup includes three models: Sol, Terra and Luna. According to the company, GPT 5.6 Sol is its most powerful model so far. Terra is designed for everyday use, while Luna is a faster and more affordable option. OpenAI also said these models include its strongest safeguards to date.

However, the new models are not available to everyone yet. Instead of launching them publicly, OpenAI started with a limited preview for a small group of trusted partners. The company said this decision was made after the US government requested an early preview before a wider release.

Altman also addressed the delayed public launch on X. Calling it the "bad news," he wrote, "At the request of the US government, it is launching today in limited preview instead of the open access launch we were planning on." He added, "We are working with the government to get to general availability as fast as we can."

OpenAI CEO also said that the gradual rollouts are a “quite reasonable” approach for increasingly capable AI systems, but said this “isn’t quite the process that we think is optimal.” He said the company is working with the government to create a transparent and reliable process so future AI models can reach users more quickly.

OpenAI does not want government previews to become the “long-term default.” The company explained, "It keeps the best tools from users, developers, enterprises, cyber defenders, and global partners who need them. We are taking this short-term step because we believe it is the strongest path to broader availability in the coming weeks, while we work with the Administration to develop the cyber Executive Order framework and a repeatable process for future model releases."

Apple is expected to make a big change to its iPhone launch strategy this year. Instead of introducing all new iPhone models together, the company is reportedly planning to split the launch into two phases. The iPhone 18 Pro series and Apple's first foldable iPhone, which is likely to be called the iPhone Ultra, could arrive later this year. Meanwhile, the standard iPhone 18 model is said to launch in 2027. While Apple has not confirmed these plans, several leaks and reports have hinted at this new strategy. Now, a new report suggests that the foldable iPhone may also follow the same launch pattern as the iPhone X.

According to supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple could unveil the foldable iPhone alongside the iPhone 18 Pro lineup. However, customers may have to wait a little longer before they can place their orders or buy the device.

Kuo says Apple is expected to assemble only around 7 to 8 million foldable iPhones during the second half of 2026. Of these, just 500,000 to 1 million units may be ready during the third quarter. For comparison, Apple is expected to produce around 20 to 22 million units of the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max in the same period.

As per leaks, the iPhone Ultra is expected to feature a 7.8-inch OLED main display and a 5.5-inch outer screen. Powering the device could be the A20 Pro chip. Last week, Meta announced a new WhatsApp username feature. It aims to allow users to chat without sharing their phone numbers. Instead, people can connect using a unique username. This feature would be especially useful when you want to message someone you just met, but don't want to share your phone number.

Government's notice to Meta

Just after Meta announced the feature, MeitY sent a formal notice to the company to pause the rollout and explain within three days how the username feature would prevent misuse and identity spoofing. The government believes usernames could make it harder to identify fraudsters because users would no longer need to share their phone numbers. Officials also fear that scammers could create usernames that closely resemble those of real people, government offices or trusted organisations to carry out phishing and impersonation scams.

Meta's defense

After receiving the notice, WhatsApp shared a detailed explainer of the username feature on X. The company said usernames will be optional and not compulsory. It also clarified that users will not be able to find someone simply by searching for a username. "Just like you can’t search for a phone number in WhatsApp, you can’t search for a username," the platform wrote.

WhatsApp also advised users to choose a unique username and enable a username key for extra security. It said that when username-based messaging launches later this year, users will see safety details before replying to someone new. This will include the sender's country, whether the account is newly created and whether both users are part of any common groups.

To reduce impersonation, WhatsApp said well-known names and their variations have been reserved for their legitimate owners.

Following the notice, Meta team also met MeitY officials to explain the feature and address the government's concerns.

Latest update and what's next

Meta was originally asked to submit its response by July 6. However, MeitY has now reportedly extended the deadline by another three days. As per reports, Meta now has until July 9 to submit its detailed reply. The government will likely resume the rollout after the officials are fully satisfied with the safeguards.

The device may measure just 4.5mm when unfolded and around 9.7mm when folded and can weigh 201 grams. The device may also get new hinge and flexible OLED panel technology.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 specs

Under the hood, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 is expected to be powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chipset, paired with 12GB of LPDDR5X RAM. It may get storage options: 256GB and 512GB.

Speaking of the display, it may get a 7.6-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X inner display and a 5.5-inch cover screen. However, the camera setup may get some big changes. Samsung is reportedly dropping the dedicated telephoto camera. This means there can be a dual 50MP camera setup. For selfies and video calls, the device may get a 10MP sensor on the cover display while the inner screen may get a 4MP camera.

The Galaxy Z Fold 8 is rumoured to pack a 4,800mAh battery with support for 45W wired charging and 15W wireless charging. On the software side, the foldable is expected to ship with Android 17-based One UI 9 and receive seven years of Android OS and security updates. Samsung is also likely to expand its Galaxy AI suite.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 price in India (Expected)

As per the reports, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 may cost around Rs 1,65,000 in India, while international pricing may begin at $1,799 in the US. However, the details are not yet confirmed and we may have to wait for a few more weeks to get detailed information.

As we have said earlier, the best time to buy a smartphone was yesterday and the second best time is today. Why? Because, the cost of your next smartphone can even rise further, even after the steep price hikes done by the manufacturers in the past two months. A new report suggests that Samsung is now planning for another round of DRAM price hikes in the third quarter of 2026 as the demand continues to rise.

As per the reports, Samsung Electronics is in discussions with customers to increase DRAM prices by up to 20 per cent compared to the previous quarter. And this comes at a time when the memory market remains under the mounting pressure from strong demand and limited supply. The industry sources also indicate that LPDDR memory, which is commonly used in smartphones, can witness even steeper increases due to supply shortages affecting both mobile devices and AI focused servers.

The timing is also important. Memory is among the most important components inside modern smartphones. Any further increase in memory costs often translates into higher production costs for device makers, which can eventually be passed on to consumers through higher retail prices. And we have already seen this. Brands like Samsung, Vivo, Oppo, Nothing have already increased the prices of their mid-range devices.

And, according to the market research firm TrendForce, the DRAM supply will remain tight through the third quarter of 2026. While the demand from some consumer electronics categories has slowed, supply constraints are still expected to keep memory prices elevated. In any case, the prices are expected to rise between 13 and 18 per cent during the quarter it added.

But what after 2026? The memory manufacturers are signing long-term supply agreements with major customers. This will help the brands secure future supply and stabilise pricing, reducing the chances of a sharp market correction. Companies like Micron have revealed the long term agreements with the customers, while similar arrangements are now spreading to industries like automotive manufacturing.

We already know that Apple is reportedly planning to split the launch cycle into two. This year, we may get to see the launch of iPhone 18 Pro series and its first ever foldable, the iPhone Ultra. As per the reports, the iPhone 18 may get 6.3-inch LTPO OLED panel with a fluid 120Hz ProMotion refresh rate while the iPhone 18e may get smaller 6.12-inch LTPS OLED display limited to a standard 60Hz refresh rate. Why the government is concerned about WhatsApp usernames

The government recently raised concerns about Meta's plan to launch usernames on WhatsApp. The feature would allow people to connect without sharing their phone numbers. According to the government, this could make it more difficult to identify fraudsters. Officials are worried that scammers may create usernames that look similar to those of real people, government departments or trusted organisations. A team from Meta reportedly met officials in the IT Ministry after receiving a notice regarding the feature.

WhatsApp addressed concerns

After concerns were raised, WhatsApp shared a detailed explainer of the feature on X. The company said usernames will be optional and not compulsory. It also clarified that users will not be able to find someone simply by searching for a username. "Just like you can't search for a phone number in WhatsApp, you can't search for a username."

WhatsApp advised users to choose a unique username and enable a username key as an extra layer of security. The company also said username-based messaging is not available yet. When it launches later this year, users will see safety information before replying to a new person. This will include the sender's country, whether the account is newly created and whether both users share any common groups.

To reduce impersonation, WhatsApp said well-known names and their variations, including those of public figures, celebrities, government organisations and Meta Verified accounts, have been reserved for their legitimate owners.

"People are making false claims about reserving popular or well-known usernames – this isn't true. We enabled reservations before usernames launch later this year because we think people will feel strongly about what username they want on WhatsApp. We're taking our time and listening to feedback so that when it rolls out later this year we get it right," the company clarified.

OnePlus and Realme smartphones could soon undergo one of their biggest software changes yet. According to a new report, Oppo is planning a wider restructuring of its smartphone business that may result in the end of OxygenOS and Realme UI. Instead, future OnePlus and Realme phones are expected to run ColorOS, Oppo's Android interface. According to the report, keeping three separate software platforms is expensive and takes a lot of effort. Removing two user interfaces (UIs) could help reduce both the cost and the workload. While OnePlus and Realme have not yet officially commented on this, the move seems unavoidable. Moreover, as we reported previously, Oppo could bring both OnePlus and Realme under his umbrella, taking up their individual identities.

According to a report by Smartprix, Oppo is looking to simplify its software strategy by focusing only on ColorOS. At present, Oppo uses ColorOS, OnePlus ships phones with OxygenOS, and Realme offers Realme UI. Although all three interfaces are already based on the same software foundation, they continue to exist as separate products with different branding and features.

The report claims that maintaining three Android skins requires additional research, development and software engineering resources. By moving all future devices to ColorOS, Oppo could lower costs while directing more time and investment into improving a single software platform. If the report is to be trusted, then the future OnePlus and Realme smartphones would launch with ColorOS instead of OxygenOS or Realme UI. Existing devices are not expected to be affected immediately, and there is no official word on how the transition would happen for current users.

Oppo is also said to be bringing its smartphone brands closer together. As per the report, OnePlus could focus mainly on India and China, while Realme could reduce its presence in China and pay more attention to international markets. Furthermore, it has also been previously reported that OnePlus after-sales service in India may become part of Oppo's service network, with standalone OnePlus service centres gradually being closed.

Aside from the news about the discontinuation of OxygenOS and RealmeUI, the report also claimed that Realme could eventually become a smartphone series under Oppo instead of operating as a separate sub-brand. The news was related to the Indian market, and currently it couldn't be verified if that would be the case globally.

On the other hand, OnePlus is reported to function as Oppo's online-focused brand. OnePlus also shut down all its offline stores in India earlier, and reports also suggest that OnePlus websites in countries such as Germany and Spain have already started displaying Oppo products, which hints at closer integration between the brands.

However, at the time of writing, neither OnePlus nor Realme has officially commented on the report. We have reached out to both companies for comment and will update this article once they respond.

What is Boss Scam?

India's cybercrime agency, the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C), has warned people about a new online fraud called the Boss Scam. The agency shared this warning through its official X account, CyberDost I4C.

In the Boss Scam, cybercriminals pretend to be a company's boss or senior executive to trick employees into sending money. Unlike older scams that used fake email addresses or phone numbers, this scam can involve messages sent from the boss's real WhatsApp account if it has been hacked.

How Boss Scam works

The attack usually starts simple as scammers pretend to be officials from the RBI and contact CEOs through email or WhatsApp. The message usually says that there is an urgent issue with their finances and they should review it as soon as possible, and with that, they also send a ZIP file containing an executable (.exe) file and a dynamic link library (.dll) file.

If your CEO opens that file on their Windows computer, then malware takes over the control of their device. Following that, the scammers steal the CEO's WhatsApp Web session and send messages to the people from their finance staff, asking them to foot a bill or transfer money urgently. Since the messages come from the CEO's account, employees may trust them and send the money.

How to stay safe

• Never approve urgent payments based only on a WhatsApp message or email, even if it comes from a senior executive.

Microsoft has just revealed a full list of games that will soon leave the Xbox Game Pass. So if you are a Game Pass loyalist, you have just a little over a week to finish playing these titles before they disappear from the service. The list of games that we are talking about includes 11 games and popular titles like EA Sports FC 24, PowerWash Simulator, Shadow of the Tomb Raider and Golf With Your Friends are included here. An all-digital Xbox future?

Just recently, PlayStation officially announced that physical disks won’t be a thing by 2028. And shortly after that, reports of Microsoft's next-generation Xbox console, currently codenamed Project Helix, not including a disc drive emerged.

Now whether or not these reports are true, time will tell as nothing has been officially confirmed yet. But as of now, Microsoft might let players convert eligible Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S physical games into digital licences. 

Now if this feature does get introduced, it could make it easier for players to carry their existing game library forward without relying on physical discs. But, it would also make the Xbox feel inching towards going digital. And a disk-less gaming future is something that has left the entire community concerned for the last few days.

1. Choosing the wrong size dehumidifier

This is probably the most common mistake, and it happens more often than you would think. People walk into a store, see a good deal, and buy whatever fits their budget without checking if it actually suits their space. A dehumidifier that is too small for a large room will run constantly, straining to keep up, and still leave the air feeling damp.

On the other hand, a unit that is too big for a small room cycles on and off too quickly, wasting electricity without giving the air enough time to actually dry out. Before you buy one, measure your room and check the manufacturer's coverage recommendations. It might feel like an extra step, but it saves you money and frustration later.

2. Placing dehumidifier at wrong location

3. Not cleaning dehumidifier air filter

Filters trap dust, pet hair, and other particles from the air, and over time they get clogged. The use of a dirty filter results in a machine working harder than it is supposed to do, resulting in increased power consumption and a reduction of the machine's lifespan.

What is even worse, it may reduce the efficiency with which the machine removes moisture from the air. Always ensure that the filter is checked at least once every two weeks.

4. Leaving doors and windows open

It is easy to forget that a dehumidifier needs a closed space to do its job well. If windows or doors are left open, humid air from outside keeps flowing in, and the machine ends up chasing a moisture level it can never quite catch.

Before switching it on, take a moment to shut the doors and windows in the room. This small habit makes a noticeable difference in how quickly and effectively the air dries out.

The Indian government has directed the App Store and Play Store to remove two mobile applications that were allegedly linked to stopping moving e-rickshaws through Bluetooth connectivity. The order was issued by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) after reports claimed that some users could connect to nearby battery systems and switch off their power using the apps. Although there is no confirmed evidence that the applications could remotely stop e-rickshaws while they were in motion, the government acted as a precaution. Following the directive, both BAT-BMS and Epoch Li-ion apps have reportedly been removed from the app stores, raising concerns about public safety and potential misuse of Bluetooth-enabled technology.

MeitY confirms removal of BAT-BMS and Epoch Li-ion apps

Speaking at the CII Cybersecurity Summit on July 3, MeitY Secretary S Krishnan confirmed that two applications, BAT-BMS and Epoch Li-ion, which were reportedly used to turn off the e-rickshaw battery remotely, have now been taken down. 

The action from the government came when several videos appeared on social media where many people connected to nearby e-rickshaw batteries using Bluetooth and cutting the power supply. As the clips went viral, they quickly raised fears among drivers and passengers about the safety of such battery systems.

How BAT-BMS and Epoch Li-ion apps work

BAT-BMS is a Chinese app developed by Shenzhen Grenergy Technology. It was created as a companion app for Bluetooth-enabled lithium-ion batteries, as it allows users to check battery details such as voltage, current, temperature, charging cycles and battery health. Furthermore, it's important to note that a device can only connect to a battery at a time.

Aside from the abovementioned, there was a feature that lets users switch the battery's discharge function on or off using the app. However, it was there as a safety measure, and at the time of development, it wasn't considered that some notorious people would misuse it.

Experts say the problem is not the monitoring features themselves but weak security settings in some battery management systems. Many low-cost electric vehicles use battery systems that either lack password protection or continue to operate with factory default credentials. This can allow anyone within Bluetooth range to connect if proper security measures are not in place.
