State-led telecom service provider BSNL has made headlines recently for introducing affordable plans and exclusive offerings for its subscribers. In a recent move to make its customers-focused Special Tariff Vouchers (STVs) more lucrative, the company is now offering free insurance benefit with select recharge plans.
The announced recharges will offer up to Rs 1 lakh coverage to users in case of accidental death and up to Rs 10,000 in case of a cyber fraud at no extra cost beyond the plan’s price. The telecom operator has collaborated with The Oriental Insurance Company Limited (OICL) for the offer.

Rs 202 Plan: The STV comes with 30 days’ validity. It offers 300 minutes of calling, 5GB data and 100 SMS, along with the insurance benefit.
Rs 2,449 Plan: The annual STV offer is valid for 365 days. It brings unlimited calls (local + STD + roaming), 2GB data/day and 100 SMS/day.
Note that the insurance coverage on these plans will be auto-activated within 24 hours of recharging a BSNL number and the validity will be co-terminus with the plan’s end date.
The accidental death coverage covers death caused by road accidents, snake bites, burns, electrocution and lightning strikes. However, the affair should be reported within 48 hours of the incident. Subscribers can either call the toll-free number 1800 11 8485 or email “Claims.bsnl@orientalinsurance.co.in” to start the claim process.
For cyber-fraud protection, the plans cover money lost to online frauds (such as online theft, phishing and email spoofing) up to Rs 10,000. The subscriber’s BSNL number should be linked to a bank account. Plus, the fraud should be reported within seven days of the incident.

Plus, another new feature, “Kavach Number”, lets women subscribers generate a masked number which can be used to recharge at stores.
