After raising prices of Macs and iPads globally last month, Apple recently increased iPhone prices in Japan by around 11 per cent. The price hike affected the iPhone 17 lineup, the iPhone Air, and the iPhone 16e. Apple has not explained why it made this change, but reports hint at Japan’s weak currency. The Japanese yen has lost significant value against the US dollar and recently touched its weakest level in decades. Since Apple reports its earnings in dollars, a weaker yen means the company earns less from sales in Japan. Raising prices may help Apple reduce the impact of the falling currency.
Apple is also dealing with higher production costs. Prices of several parts used in smartphones have increased in recent months. This may have put pressure on Apple’s profit margins. But the company has not announced any iPhone price increase outside Japan.
The move has raised an important question for buyers in other countries, including India. Since Apple has already increased prices for some products and has now done the same for iPhones in Japan, many are wondering if India is next.

For now, there is no official sign that Apple plans to increase iPhone prices in India. The recent changes in Japan appear to be linked mainly to the country’s weak currency rather than a global pricing strategy.
India is also in a different position. Apple manufactures a large number of iPhones in India, which may help reduce the impact of global currency movements and import-related costs.
That said, higher component prices and memory shortages remain challenges for the entire smartphone industry. If production costs continue to rise, Apple may eventually review pricing in more markets. However, there is no confirmation that India will see an iPhone price hike anytime soon.
Apple is expected to share more details about its business and pricing outlook during its fiscal third-quarter earnings call on July 30. Until then, there is no clear indication that Indian iPhone buyers should expect higher prices.
