As I write this, the Tata Group is closing the agreement to buy Apple's Indian supplier factory. It is reported that they will acquire the factory by August 2023.

Once the deal comes through, it will make the Tata Group the first local company which will start assembling the Apple iPhones.

The factory in question here is the Wistron Corporation factory situated in Karnataka. This factory currently assembles the iPhone 14 models. Speaking of its worth, the factory is valued at ₹600 million and employs over 10,000 workers.

Tata Group

It’s a huge deal meaning huge billables for the Tata Group. A Bloomberg report states that post the acquisition, Tata Group will fulfil Wistron Corporation’s target of shipping iPhones worth $1.8 billion by the end of fiscal year 2023-24. In addition to this, Tata Group will also be tripling the workforce, as was earlier promised by Wistron Corp.

Wistron Corp is a Taiwanese company and Tata’s takeover will mean the end of its operations in India.

This is seen as a positive acquisition for India as it will motivate more companies to set up their manufacturing in India, further reducing their dependency on China.

An earlier report by Trendforce stated that it is possible that the upcoming iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus models will be manufactured in India by the Tata Group. It further reported that the Tata Group will only get smaller orders for the upcoming iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus variants.

So, India might be a part of sending out the first batch of shipments for the iPhone 15 series expected to release in September this year.
