OpenAI is losing one of the longest serving senior executives, Brad Lightcap. He announced that he is leaving the ChatGPT maker to start a new venture. For the unversed, Lightcap joined OpenAI in 2018, long before ChatGPT turned the company into one of the biggest names in artificial intelligence. Over the years, he helped build much of the business and operational infrastructure behind OpenAI’s rapid growth and worked closely with CEO Sam Altman.
Lightcap joined OpenAI in 2018 after roles at JPMorgan and Dropbox, and through earlier connections with Altman at Y Combinator. He began with financial and operational responsibilities and later became one of Altman’s most trusted senior executives.
He served as OpenAI’s chief financial officer before becoming chief operating officer. As COO, he helped scale the company’s commercial operations, including enterprise partnerships, go-to-market strategy, and core business functions.
Lightcap has said he helped build teams across finance, legal, people operations, corporate security, partnerships, and government relations. His work tracked OpenAI’s shift from a small research lab into a major commercial AI company.

Earlier this year, his role changed when OpenAI moved him out of day-to-day operations into a position focused on special projects and major deals, while chief revenue officer Denise Dresser took over many operational duties.
As per the reports, OpenAI will not expect any immediate disruption as many of Lightcap’s responsibilities had already been reassigned. The company has also stated that his departure will not affect ongoing teams.
But his exit marks the loss of a senior leader with nearly eight years of institutional knowledge and close working relationship with Altman. This comes after senior recent leadership changes including Fidji Simo moving into an advisory role and additional executive departures. Altman has also publicly thanked Lightcap, saying OpenAI would not be where it is today without him.
