WhatsApp, Telegram and other apps to enforce SIM binding from Jan 1, 2027: What it means

HIGHLIGHTS

SIM binding rules are expected to take effect from January 1, 2027.

WhatsApp, Telegram and other messaging apps could be affected.

Users without their registered SIM may face access issues on linked devices.

If you use WhatsApp or Telegram over Wi-Fi or access your accounts across multiple devices, you may need to rethink how you stay connected. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has directed certain messaging and calling apps to link user accounts with KYC-verified SIM cards. The deadline for compliance is December 31, 2026, while January 1, 2027, is being cited as the operational start date for SIM binding. The move could affect how users access these services on devices without the linked SIM. Here’s what SIM binding means, which apps could be affected, and what users should know before the new rules take effect.

What is SIM binding?

If you’re not familiar with what SIM binding is, then let me tell you that it’s a process that links an app to the SIM card associated with the mobile number used to register an account. Under the new rules from the Indian government, the app must remain linked to that active SIM in the user’s device. Hence, having the registered phone number alone may not be enough to keep using the service if the SIM card is missing or inactive.

SIM binding operational from January 1

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has directed communication apps to keep user accounts linked to the registered SIM card, which must remain active and present on the device. The compliance deadline for SIM binding has been extended to December 31, 2026, meaning the requirements are expected to take effect from January 1, 2027, for platforms that complete implementation by the deadline.  This deadline has been pushed because of complaints from various companies citing technical difficulties.

In addition to that, the previous regulations on SIM Binding have been modified as well. Earlier, it had been mentioned that the user will be logged out of his/her web session every six hours; however, now it has been replaced by risk-based logouts. According to this, the services may be terminated immediately in suspected fraud cases.

Which apps will get affected?

Here are the apps that authorities have previously clarified will require SIM binding:

  • WhatsApp
  • Telegram
  • Signal
  • Snapchat
  • Arattai
  • ShareChat
  • Josh
  • JioChat

How could SIM binding affect users?

According to the currently available information, users who remove or deactivate their registered SIM may face access problems after SIM binding comes into effect. People using tablets, secondary phones, or Wi-Fi-only devices could also experience restrictions.

Aside from that, the travellers who switch SIM cards may need to check their account setup. Users of WhatsApp Web and other linked devices could be asked to reconnect, although automatic six-hour logouts are no longer a blanket requirement.
