US Govt sounds alarm on Mythos AI, even as Anthropic closes in on OpenAI’s valuation

HIGHLIGHTS

The White House has reportedly cautioned against widening access to Mythos AI due to potential cyber risk and infrastructure limits.

Mythos is considered powerful enough to detect and exploit critical software vulnerabilities, prompting restricted early access.

Anthropic is said to be targeting a valuation above $900 billion, with secondary markets hinting at a possible $1 trillion mark.

After India demanded for fair access, the White House has reportedly raised concerns over the plans by Anthropic to expand access to its advanced Mythos AI model amid the growing tensions. According to the Wall Street Journal report citing its sources, the officials within the administration of Donald Trump have privately communicated their reservations about allowing broader use of the system.

Mythos, which was introduced recently, is known as a highly capable AI tool that can identify and potentially exploit vulnerabilities in critical software systems. Due to the sensitive nature, Anthropic had initially restricted access to a limited group of organisations for controlled testing. However, the company has said it is considering the expansion of availability to a wider set of users, including dozens of companies and institutions.

On the other hand, government officials are said to be particularly concerned about whether Anthropic has the necessary infrastructure to scale access without impacting existing commitments, especially those tied to public sector use. There are also fears that the broader availability of such powerful models can increase the risk of misuse, including potential cyber threats.

Interestingly, this comes after multiple reports claimed that the model had already been accessed by unauthorised users shortly after its limited rollout was announced. It must be noted that Anthropic has not publicly commented on these developments, but the situation looks to be critical.

In the meantime, Anthropic seems to be getting good momentum. The company is reportedly gearing up to raise new funding at a valuation of above $900 billion, which is more than the valuation of OpenAI. Secondary market activity has already hinted at valuations nearing the $1 trillion mark.
