Locked out of your Google account? New selfie video feature can help you regain access, know how

HIGHLIGHTS

Google says the videos are encrypted, optional, and protected with liveness detection to prevent deepfake-based fraud.

Users can verify their identity with a short selfie video if they lose access to their Google account.

The feature is rolling out gradually and complements existing recovery methods such as passkeys and recovery contacts.

Google has introduced a new account recovery feature that will allow users to verify their identity using a selfie video. The new video option is made for people who want to regain access to their Google accounts if they have been locked out or are unable to use their usual sign-in methods. The company says that the feature offers an additional layer of flexibility along with existing recovery options such as passkeys and recovery contacts.

How the feature works

To enable this feature, users will have to record a short selfie video by following on-screen instructions that include a series of simple head movements. The video is then securely stored in the user’s Google Account with their permission.

If the users are unable to access their account in the future, they can record another selfie video during the recovery process. Google will compare the new recording with the original to verify the user’s identity before restoring account access.

Privacy

Google said that the selfie videos are encrypted while stored and can be deleted by users at any time via their account settings. The company adds that the videos are used only for account sign-in and recovery unless users choose to allow them for other purposes.

To reduce the risk of fraud, Google has built multiple security checks into the system. These include live movement detection to confirm that the person recording the video is physically present, as well as matching the new recording with the previously saved selfie. The company also says its existing systems continue to monitor for suspicious login attempts and potential impersonation techniques, including deepfake-based attacks.

Gradual rollout

As per the blog post, the selfie video option is rolling out to eligible Google Account users. Google says users can check whether the feature is available for their account and set it up through the dedicated account recovery page.
