Your mobile number could land you in legal trouble if it is misused by someone else. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has recently cautioned the citizens of the country against sharing SIM cards registered in their names or using connections obtained through fraudulent means. Not only that but the warning also covers tampered IMEI numbers, SIM boxes and tools that manipulate telecom identifiers. Authorities also clarified that the users who will be found linked to connections involved in unlawful activities could face serious penalties, including imprisonment and hefty fines. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has warned people about fake SIM cards, misuse of telecom IDs and tampering with IMEI numbers. Not only that but the authorities have also asked people not to share or transfer SIM cards registered in their names. If someone uses such a SIM card for illegal activities, the person whose name is registered on the SIM could also face legal action. These violations can lead to up to three years in prison and a fine of up to Rs 50 lakh.

The DoT also advised people not to get SIM cards using fake documents, fraud, cheating or someone else’s identity. Other than that, they have been instructed to avoid using phones or other devices with tampered IMEI numbers. The department specifically warned against using SIM boxes or other equipment that can change or alter IMEI numbers. Users are also advised to avoid apps, websites or other tools to change their Calling Line Identity (CLI) or other telecom identifiers.
If you want to check all the mobile connections issued in your name, then you can simply do it via the Sanchar Saathi portal or mobile app. All you need to do is open the the Sanchar Saathi website or app > use the service that lets you check mobile connections issued in your name > enter the required mobile number and complete the verification process > review the list of connections linked to your identity > report or block numbers that you do not recognise or no longer need.
