Apple starts leasing iPhones, Macs and iPads in the US, but there is a catch

HIGHLIGHTS

Apple launches a new device leasing programme in the US.

Users can pay monthly and choose flexible options later.

The service replaces Apple's previous iPhone upgrade plan.

Apple has launched the Apple Upgrade Programme for customers in the United States of America. The leasing programme lets customers own an eligible iPhone, Apple Watch, Mac, and iPad without making the full payment. Consumers can join the upgrade programme through the online Apple Store, the Apple Store application, or physical Apple stores. Upon joining the Apple Upgrade Program, buyers get the benefit of making convenient monthly instalments and have the choice of multiple options at the end of the lease term, such as an upgrade to the next product, buying the current product, or returning the product. Here’s everything you need to know about the Apple Upgrade Program.

Apple Upgrade Programme plan details

With the Apple Upgrade Program, customers can lease an iPhone or Apple Watch for 12 to 24 months. However, if they choose a Mac or iPad, they can lease it for 24 to 36 months. The company also stated that the monthly lease prices for the iPhone start at $17.99, while it’s $11.99 for an Apple Watch, $24.99 for a Mac, and $11.99 for an iPad.

Not only that, but Apple is also providing the buyers with the opportunity to further reduce their monthly lease payments by trading an eligible device through Apple Trade In when they first join the programme. Moreover, if a consumer pays the monthly lease amount using an Apple Card, then they can also earn 3 per cent Daily Cash on their lease payments. Do note that you can also add an AppleCare subscription at an extra cost for protection.

Apple is also providing the buyers with multiple options at the end of the lease. They can upgrade to a newer model, buy the device with a one-time payment, or simply return it and leave the programme. Apart from this, the Apple Upgrade programme is powered by Klarna, and the lease details, billing schedules, and remaining payments can be managed through the Klarna app.

With the rollout of Apple Upgrade, the company is discontinuing the existing iPhone Upgrade Program and iPhone Payments in the US. Customers currently enrolled in the iPhone Upgrade Program can keep making payments until their device is paid off, but going forward, new purchases will need to go through Apple Upgrade, Apple Card Monthly Instalments, an outright purchase, or carrier financing.

Apple Upgrade Programme: How to apply

Customers can choose an eligible Apple product online or at an Apple Store and then select Apple Upgrade as their payment option. The application is completed through Klarna and takes only a few minutes. All applicants go through a soft credit check, which does not affect their credit score. Once approved, customers can complete their purchase, pick up the device in-store, or have it delivered.
