Samsung’s latest Galaxy Z8 series have finally made choosing a new foldable smartphone a lot more interesting. This year around, it is no longer about buying the latest book-style Fold model, because up until this point, there has always been only one premium option. This time, Samsung has taken a different route by splitting its flagship foldable lineup into two very different devices: the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra and the standard Galaxy Z Fold 8, and I actually like this approach because the choice here is not about buying the ‘better’ foldable phone. Instead, it is about buying the one that suits the way you use it every day.
On one hand, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra brings you the biggest display, the best cameras, and the ultimate multitasking experience. On the other hand, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 is lighter, easier to carry, and much more comfortable to live with every single day. And if you are wondering which one deserves your money, here is how I see it.

I recently switched from the Galaxy S26 Ultra to the standard Galaxy Z Fold 8. My reason was pretty straightforward. I simply wanted something lighter and easier to use in my daily life. Trust me, the S26 Ultra is one heck of a solid all-rounder, but carrying a large phone all day started to become a hassle, and I realised convenience matters just as much as having the biggest screen. And that is exactly why I think the standard Galaxy Z Fold 8 will immediately appeal to a lot of people.

The Galaxy Z Fold 8 weighs just 201g and adopts a shorter, wider passport-style design. When folded shut, it may feel slightly wide to some but is still remarkably close to using a regular smartphone thanks to its 5.5-inch cover display. For me, that makes one-handed use much easier than massive devices like the Galaxy S26 Ultra. It also slips into a pocket more comfortably and feels less intimidating during everyday use.
The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, on the other hand, is a different beast altogether. Samsung has stayed with its familiar book-style design, complete with a larger 6.5-inch cover display. Unfold it and you get an astonishingly thin 4.1mm profile. Even at 215g, it is impressively light considering its size. And that extra size gives you an enormous 8.0-inch inner display with a squarish 10:9 aspect ratio. If you regularly work across multiple apps, reply to emails while browsing documents, or take notes while watching YouTube, the extra space makes quite a big difference.
The standard Galaxy Z Fold 8, meanwhile, comes with a 7.6-inch inner display featuring a 4:3 aspect ratio. Personally, I think this shape works better for entertainment, hands down. Streaming films and TV shows feels more immersive because you see noticeably smaller black bars on apps like Netflix or even YouTube. It also goes head-to-head with the wider inner display on the Pixel 10 Pro Fold, although Samsung still has the edge when it comes to software optimisation and multitasking.
Now, let us talk about cameras. As I already mentioned, I am coming from a Galaxy S26 Ultra, and that phone has completely spoiled me. Once you get used to flagship camera hardware, it becomes very difficult to accept compromises elsewhere. And for years, that was exactly the problem with foldables. You spent almost twice as much as a conventional flagship phone, yet the cameras left a lot to be desired.
On the bright side, I wouldn’t say this for the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra. Samsung has equipped its latest foldable flagship with a 200MP primary camera, a 50MP ultrawide sensor, and a dedicated 10MP 3x telephoto camera. Given the hardware, if camera performance sits high on your priority list, this is the foldable I would recommend without hesitation.
Now, the standard Galaxy Z Fold 8, that I personally use, makes a few sensible compromises to keep both its weight and pricing under control. You still get a capable 50MP primary camera alongside a 50MP ultrawide sensor. However, this phone doesn’t get a dedicated telephoto lens altogether. For everyday photos, a get together with friends and social media uploads, I think most people will be perfectly happy with the results. Of course, if you enjoy zoom photography, though, you will definitely notice the missing optical reach.
However, when it comes to performance, Samsung has wisely avoided creating unnecessary differences. Both phones run on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor, support 45W wired charging, 20W wireless charging and carry an IP48 rating for dust and water resistance. Given their respective sizes, the Fold 8 Ultra includes a slightly larger 5,000mAh battery, while the standard Fold 8 comes with a 4,800mAh unit. Mind you, these are higher-density silicon-carbon batteries, which is a big plus.
In my experience, either phone should comfortably last through a demanding workday packed with calls, texting, web browsing, multimedia consumption and plenty of multitasking without looking for a charger before bedtime. I know, my Fold 8 easily lasts through a full workday. But, of course, your mileage may vary depending on the type of user you are. For most folks, both phones’ endurance should easily suffice.
This brings us to the pricing of both smartphones, and Samsung’s strategy looks pretty clear in this respect. The standard Galaxy Z Fold 8 starts at Rs 1,79,999 for the 12GB RAM + 256GB storage variant and goes up to Rs 2,39,999 for the 16GB + 1TB model.
The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra sits a step higher, starting at Rs 1,99,999 for the base 12GB RAM + 256GB storage option and reaching Rs 2,59,999 for the top-end 16GB + 1TB configuration.
So, which one would I buy?
Well, if you’re like me and your priority is mainly watching content on a perfect 4:3 mobile screen, or utilising that same screen in 3:4 aspect ratio for reading, browsing or simply carrying something that doubles as a compact tablet without feeling bulky in your pocket, I would happily save the Rs 20,000 and choose the standard Galaxy Z Fold 8. I think this phone delivers a fantastic media experience while still feeling reassuringly close to a normal smartphone when folded shut. In fact, out of the two foldable flagships, I am personally reviewing the Fold 8, while I have given the Fold 8 Ultra for review to my colleague.

But, if you want absolutely everything Samsung can offer in a foldable smartphone, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra is the no-nonsense obvious choice. You get the largest display, the top-tier multitasking experience and flagship-grade cameras that make the premium asking price feel justified.
Of course, neither phone is trying to replace the other. Unlike slab phones, where it often gets tricky to justify the differences between an Ultra and a standard model, in this case, both of these Samsung foldables cater to two very different kinds of buyers. And that I feel makes choosing between them much easier than you think.
