Can running a room heater damage your PS5 while playing GTA 6? Things gamers should know
Winter is here, and if you are planning to spend hours exploring Los Santos in GTA 6 when it arrives, you might also want to keep a room heater running during those long gaming sessions. After all, nobody wants to sit through a chilly winter evening just to enjoy their favourite game. However, running a room heater close to your television and gaming console raises a practical question: can the additional heat affect your expensive electronics?
The short answer is that using a room heater and PS5 simultaneously is generally fine. However, the placement of your heater, room temperature and ventilation around your gaming setup matter. Here’s what you should know before settling in for an extended GTA 6 session.
Can a room heater make your PS5 overheat while playing GTA 6?
The PS5 generates considerable heat while running demanding games. Its internal cooling system uses a fan and heatsink to dissipate that heat and maintain safe operating temperatures. During extended gaming sessions, the fan may work harder to keep the internal components cool.
That heat has to go somewhere, and the problem begins when a heater is placed too close to the console. Instead of drawing in relatively cool room air, the PS5 may end up taking in air that’s already been warmed by the heater.
This doesn’t mean your PS5 will immediately overheat, but prolonged exposure to additional heat isn’t ideal, especially during lengthy gaming sessions.
Does playing GTA 6 put additional pressure on your PS5?
GTA 6 is expected to be a graphically demanding game, with its detailed environments, lighting, physics and open-world interactions. While its actual thermal demands will depend on the final optimisation, demanding games generally make gaming hardware work harder than lighter titles.
The PS5 is built for games that push its hardware, so playing GTA 6 for a few hours shouldn’t be a concern by itself. The situation changes if the console is already struggling to stay cool because of poor ventilation or a heater blowing hot air towards it.
Sony recommends an ambient operating temperature of 5°C to 35°C for the PS5. Keeping your gaming room within this range is important.
Can a room heater damage your OLED or QLED television?
Your television also needs some attention. Modern TVs generate heat during operation and have ventilation openings, usually around the rear panel, to help dissipate it.
If the heater is facing your TV, the rear panel can get warmer than it normally would during operation. This is particularly worth avoiding if the television is placed close to a wall or inside a cabinet, where there is already limited room for heat to escape.
This applies to OLED, QLED and conventional LED televisions. If you’ve invested in a premium OLED TV to experience GTA 6 with better contrast and picture quality, keeping it away from direct heat is a sensible precaution.
Can running a room heater and PS5 together overload your electricity socket?
Interestingly, electrical safety could be a bigger concern than the heat itself. Room heaters are high-power appliances and can draw considerably more electricity than a television or gaming console.
Connecting a heater, PS5 and television to an inadequately rated extension board can overload it. This may cause the extension board or socket to overheat, trip the circuit breaker or create an electrical hazard.
Therefore, I suggest using a separate wall socket for the heater rather than plugging it into the extension board running your TV and PS5. Also, don’t ignore signs such as a warm plug, a burning smell or a breaker that keeps tripping. These could indicate that the socket or wiring isn’t handling the load properly.
How far should you keep a room heater from your PS5 and TV?
There isn’t one universal distance that applies to every heater. The clearance requirements mentioned in your heater’s user manual should take priority.
As a general precaution, keep the heater away from your gaming setup and make sure its hot air isn’t blowing towards the TV or console. Also, avoid keeping the PS5 inside a cramped TV cabinet where warm air can accumulate.
Give your console enough room to draw in cool air and exhaust hot air. This becomes particularly important during extended gaming sessions.
Should you switch off your room heater while playing GTA 6?
No, not necessarily. You can comfortably use a room heater while playing GTA 6 or watching television, provided your room doesn’t become excessively hot and your electronics aren’t exposed to direct heat.
Your PS5 and television are designed to operate in normal household environments. You don’t need to choose between staying warm and enjoying your gaming setup. Just keep the heater at a safe distance, maintain proper ventilation and use a suitable electrical socket.
After all, the last thing you want during an exciting GTA 6 session is an overheating warning or an electrical problem that could have been avoided with a little planning.
