Butter movie is about a girl in foster care Destiny who discovers her talent for butter carving. She finds herself pitted against an ambitious local woman in their town's annual contest. Set around Johnson County, Iowa a laid-back Bob has won the state fair's butter-carving contest 15 years running. His wife Laura dreams about Bob becoming governor. However, when the contest organizers ask him to step aside so others can win, she's incensed.
When Bob won't protest, she decides to enter herself into the contest. Meanwhile, Bob goes to a strip club and ends up with a stripper Brooke in his minivan.
In the county contest, Laura’s up against African-American foster child Destiny being raised by a white couple, Ethan and Jill Emmet. The stripper Brooke also enters the contest as she wants to harass them because Bob owes her $600.
Laura enlists the help of her old boyfriend Boyd in order to win. Things heat up at the state fair are Laura's stepdaughter and Destiny's foster parents also decide to support them.
