Hulk, reverted to his form of Bruce Banner in Sanctum Sanctorum, warns Strange and Wong about Thanos’ plan to destroy half of all life on the planet. They recruit Stark when Thanos’ lieutenants arrive to steal the Time Stone, which draws Peter Parker to them. They are unable to steal it, and so they capture Strange instead. Stark and Parker sneak onto Maw’s spaceship and Wong stays to guard the Sanctum.
Thanos’ troop is after the Reality Stone being guarded in Knowhere. Thor manages a distress call and goes to Nidavellir to create a powerful weapon called Stormbreaker. The rest of the crew try to stop Thanos from taking the Reality Stone, but they are too late. He kidnaps Gamora and sacrifices her to the Soul Stone's keeper, Red Skull, and acquires it.
The rest of Thanos’ lieutenants ambush the Avengers in Edinburgh, to steal the Mind Stone from Vision’s forehead. Rogers, Romanoff and Sam Wilson save Wanda and Vision, and take them to the Avengers compound to debate on how to keep Thanos from stealing the stone, with or without killing Vision.
Nebula escapes Thanos’ captivity and dispatches a message for the rest of the Guardians to meet on Titan. Stark and Parker save Strange and meet the rest on Titan where using the Time Stone, Strange deduces only one future that guarantees the Avengers’ win. They plan to subdue him despite Thanos’ justification, and are succeeded when Nebula overpowers Thanos. But Quill realizes that Gamora is dead and breaks the power hold of the group in fury, which severely injures Stark. Strange offers up the Time Stone in exchange to spare Stark’s life.
Thanos’ army attacks Wakanda where the rest of the Avengers put up a brave but weakened fight. Shuri almost manages to extract the Mind Stone from Vision but Thanos is already there, wreaking havoc. Maximoff destroys Vision and the Stone, but Thanos reverses it using the Time Stone, extracts the Stone and kills Vision anyway. Thor weakens him with the Stormbreaker but Thanos only snaps his fingers in the gauntlet and teleports, leaving destruction in his wake. Many Avengers die while many others remain stranded on Titan.

1. Tom Holland was not allowed to read the script for this movie, since he revealed too many secrets for Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017). In one of the promotional videos for the movie, several of its cast members are in an interrogation room refusing to reveal any spoilers, and Holland's mouth is conspicuously taped shut.
2. Mark Ruffalo revealed that he was given a fake script due to his habit of accidentally spoiling past Marvel movies. He jokingly claimed in an interview that the fake script was better than the real one.
3. (at around 1h 20 mins) Drax's line "I'll do you one better: Why is Gamora?" was ad-libbed by Dave Bautista. In an interview, Dave says that Chris Pratt gave him the idea for the line.
4. Tom Holland said that although he is a big fan of Chris Pratt and loved working with him, their scenes together were often challenging. Pratt's tendency to joke in and out of character made it hard for Holland to keep a straight face at times.
5. Doctor Strange has been studying for a few years since his solo movie and is now considered one of the more powerful characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The writers also wanted to have him come off as sort of "the adult in the room" throughout the movie.
6. (at around 1h 50 mins) Chris Evans and Chris Hemsworth ad-libbed the dialogue between Captain America and Thor in which they compared their facial hair, reasoning that they have known each other long enough to have that kind of friendly banter.
7. The filmmakers did not know about the war chants the actors and actresses from Black Panther created, as that movie was not nearly finished at the time of the shooting. Winston Duke had started the chant, which led to the responding war cry that Chadwick Boseman leads.
8. Sir Kenneth Branagh (who directed Thor (2011)) can be heard at the beginning of the movie issuing the distress transmission that the Asgardian ship was being attacked.
9. (at around 1h 50 mins) Rocket calls the outriders "space dogs". This line was written after a focus group saw one of the test screenings: one of the viewers referred to the creatures as "space dogs". The filmmakers thought it was hilarious and decided to add it to the movie.
10. (at around 22 mins) For the first time in Marvel Cinematic Universe history, Bruce Banner communicates directly with The Incredible Hulk.
11. (at around 4 mins) Loki (Tom Hiddleston) says "we have a Hulk" to Thanos (Josh Brolin), quoting what Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) said to Loki in The Avengers (2012).
12. Josh Brolin (Thanos) claimed that he did not see Black Panther (2018) until a week before this movie opened, due to it being constantly sold out in Los Angeles. Brolin added that stars of the Marvel Cinematic Universe don't receive any special privileges of screening passes to the franchise.
13. (at around 51 mins) Thanos' reality-bending attacks on Mantis and Drax during the fight on Knowhere are callbacks to a scene in the original comics, where Nebula was transformed into ribbons, and Drax was sliced into cubes.
