My entire life revolves around laptops. And this isn’t only because I test them for a living, but because I also find myself using them the entire day. At work, I am busy with Chrome, juggling dozens of tabs, documents, video calls, and much more. Once at home, I spend most of my time gaming. Now, when I sit down to unwind with my favorite titles after a long day, I really don’t want to worry about whether my laptop will be able to handle the load. I actually want the laptop to disappear into the background and let the game take over. So, of course, a good display, design, build, strong performance, and portability matter to me. When I started using the new Alienware 16X Aurora, it felt like it could strike a sweet spot across all of these areas.
I have spent nearly a month with the device, and by now, it has become a part of my daily routine. But there is one thing that is hard to ignore: the hefty price tag of Rs 3,27,390. So, is the Alienware 16X Aurora worth spending close to Rs 3.3 lakh? Time to find out.

The Alienware 16X Aurora does not try to hide what it is. The laptop comes in an Interstellar Indigo colour, which is a really dark shade of blue that looks different than your usual black and white laptops. The Alienware branding on the lid makes it clear that this is built for gaming. The design does not rely on an excessive amount of RGB lighting or sharp angles to make a statement, which is the case with several Alienware laptops out there. In a nutshell, the Aurora 16X still has the Alienware character, but it can also sit on a desk without looking completely out of place when you are using it for work.
As for the build, it feels sturdy and premium, which is what you would expect from a gaming laptop at this price. There was some flex when I put pressure on the lid, but it isn’t so much that it gets you worried.
This is, however, a large machine and not something I would casually hold in one hand and go about my day. But, considering the kind of power this thing holds, it is justified. I still carried the 16X Aurora to work every day in my large tote bag and didn’t feel like the weight of the world was on my shoulders. There is some context to that, though.
I drive to work. So, my carrying was mostly limited to the short walk between my car and my desk, and then back home. In case you rely on public transport or have a long commute on foot, the size and weight could become a much bigger consideration. As far as my routine is concerned, it was manageable.
I enjoyed using the Alienware 16X Aurora, and a big reason for this is the display. The laptop comes with a 16-inch WQXGA OLED panel with a 2560 x 1600 resolution and 240Hz refresh rate. It is sharp, colourful, and just flawless for all your games. Colours look rich; dark scenes benefit from the OLED panel’s ability to produce deep blacks, and everything is just super clear and precise.
And if there is one thing I absolutely loved about the display, it was the anti-glare coating.
We all know that OLED displays can look fantastic. But reflections can become annoying when you are working (or gaming) under bright office lights. But with the Aurora 16X, I was able to sit in my office and work on Google Docs without constantly seeing reflections on the screen. A really bright tube light is right behind my desk, but in this case, it was much less distracting than what I have seen on several glossy OLED laptops.
I am generally fond of mechanical keyboards and use one in my home setup, so my expectations from gaming laptop keyboards are usually high. And the Alienware 16X Aurora meets those expectations. Well, almost. The keys are responsive and comfortable to press, making it easy to spend long hours typing or gaming. There is also a dedicated Copilot key, along with shortcuts for screen brightness, keyboard backlighting, screenshots, and switching to performance mode. That said, I miss the mechanical feel that is found on other Alienware laptops, but if you prefer quieter keys, you are going to love the experience here.
The backlighting can be customised through Alienware Command Center and is bright enough to get noticed in a well-lit room. One important thing, though, the backlight here is one-zone. This means that you can only apply one colour to the entire keyboard.
Coming to the trackpad, it is decent but definitely has scope for improvement. It is not really large, but it supports multi-touch gestures and works well enough for regular navigation. My bigger issue with it was the slightly plasticky feel and the amount of force needed to register a click. Since I anyway use a mouse with all my laptops, this did not bother me much. But if you are someone who relies on a trackpad, things just might get annoying.
Moving on to the ports, you get quite a decent number of options here. At the back of the laptop, there is a charging port, two USB Type-C ports, an HDMI port, and a USB Type-A port. On the left edge, you get an RJ-45 Ethernet port, a USB Type-A port, and a headphone jack. I like the fact that the ports are located at the back as well as the left edge. This way, my desk space wasn’t overly cluttered with wires, and I also didn’t have to get up every single time I quickly needed to connect an accessory.
As for the speakers, they are loud enough for watching videos and casual gaming. I turned the speakers to max and played a song at my office desk, and got side-eyes from my colleagues because they could hear it clearly. But as far as the quality is concerned, I would still strongly recommend external speakers or gaming headphones to get the best experience. That said, for everyday use, the speakers are perfectly fine.
The Alienware 16X Aurora is equipped with an Intel Core Ultra 9 290HX Plus chip, 32GB of DDR5 memory, and an Nvidia GeForce RTX 5070 laptop GPU with 8GB of GDDR7 VRAM.
Now, for regular office work, this is far more power than I need. I had several applications open at once, and the laptop simply got on with it. The real test, however, was what happened when I started putting it to the test with benchmarks.
In Cinebench R23, the laptop scored 31,703 in the multi-core test and 2,340 in the single-core test. That is a strong result, particularly for multi-core workloads. So if you are using the laptop for rendering, compiling, or other CPU-heavy work, there is plenty of processing power available.
To test the storage performance, I ran the CrystalDiskMark benchmark. It recorded sequential read speeds of 7,043.70MB/s and write speeds of 6,478.33MB/s. This meant large files such as video footage and other project files moved around quickly here, with very little time spent staring at a progress bar.
I also ran several synthetic GPU tests on the device. The laptop scored 30,224 in 3DMark Fire Strike, 15,340 in Fire Strike Extreme, and 7,816 in Fire Strike Ultra. In the Port Royal ray tracing test, it scored 7,964. These are impressive numbers for the RTX 5070 laptop GPU.
Now, benchmarks are one thing. For a gaming laptop, there is only one true way to understand what it can actually do. Yes, gaming.
I started playing 007 First Light at 2560 x 1600 resolution, high graphics settings, and no upscaling. The laptop, in this case, managed around 45 FPS. The game looked gorgeous, but the problem was that it did not feel as smooth as I wanted it to. This became quite obvious once I started moving around as Bond rather than simply looking at the environment.
I then enabled Nvidia DLSS Super Resolution, set it to Balanced, and switched frame generation to 4X. The frame rate jumped to around 180 FPS, and the game felt super smooth. Now, there definitely was a small trade-off. Some reflections did not look quite as impressive as they did with native rendering. But when you are running around while fighting a bunch of robots, you probably won’t care how ‘shiny’ a game looks.
To find a sweet spot, I set Nvidia DLSS to Quality with 2X frame generation enabled. This brought the frame rate down to around 96 FPS, but the image quality was almost as good as native.
I also played The Witcher 3 on the Alienware 16X Aurora, and it led to a similar experience. With ray tracing enabled, graphics set to high, 2560 x 1600 resolution, and no upscaling or frame generation, I was getting around 30 FPS. The game was still playable, and the world looked absolutely stunning on the OLED display. But it was still just 30 FPS. When I switched the DLSS on and set it to Balanced mode, I started getting around 50-60 FPS, and the gameplay was a lot smoother without any major drop in image quality.
I then tried DLSS at its maximum performance setting, which pushed the frame rate to around 80 FPS. But in this case, the visual quality trade-off was quite visible. The game still looked great, but if you are particular about image quality, you will notice the difference.
I also tested Minecraft with shader packs, and the laptop managed around 60 FPS. That is a good result considering how quickly some shader packs can bring even the most powerful gaming laptops to their knees.
So, the Alienware 16X Aurora is capable enough to play the latest AAA games at 2560 x 1600 resolution, but you should not expect every new title to run at maximum graphics settings and soaring high FPS without using technologies such as Nvidia DLSS.
All this gaming performance comes with a noticeable amount of heat. After playing 007 First Light for around an hour, the CPU package temperature reached 105 degrees Celsius. That is quite high, and it is something I would keep in mind if you plan to run demanding games for several hours at a time.
Even when I was not gaming, temperatures hovered around 80 degrees Celsius during my testing. As for the surface temperatures, it gets quite hot. But never too hot to stop using the keyboard.
Now, let’s talk about something that gaming laptops are notoriously famous for: battery life. And as you would expect, the Alienware 16X Aurora is not a device that comes with a great battery life when you are gaming. But when you are using it for work, you can still get a decent number of hours in before looking for a charger.
I started using the Alienware 16X Aurora at 8 AM on a Monday, and my work involved typing on Google Docs, browsing the web, and watching a couple of YouTube videos. By 12 PM, the battery had dropped to 30 per cent, and the Energy Saver automatically kicked in. By 3 PM, the laptop ran out of juice, and I reached for a charger. So, I basically got around 6 hours of battery life while working on this device, which is not bad at all.
PS: The keyboard backlight was turned off, display brightness was set to 30 per cent, and the laptop was running in Balanced mode. Altering any of these settings would also impact how much battery life you get from the device.
As far as gaming is concerned, the Alienware 16X Aurora will last a little over an hour when you are running a demanding title.
Coming to the Rs 3 lakh question: who exactly is this laptop for? If you are looking for a laptop with some strong performance and don’t want to go all the way up to the machines that cost over Rs 5 lakh, the Alienware 16X Aurora can be the sweet spot.
However, this is not a laptop you will want to carry around all day. It weighs over 2.5kg and comes with a large power brick. Battery life also takes a hit while gaming, so the laptop is better suited to those who plan to keep it plugged in and mostly use it at a desk.
Finally, there is the high price tag that puts it out of reach for most people. But if you have the budget and want a powerful gaming machine that can double up as your work laptop while looking the part, the Alienware 16X Aurora is something you can definitely consider.
