Diwali is almost here, and brands and online shopping platforms are rolling out festive offers, discounts and special deals to attract customers. However, this is also the time when cybercriminals look for ways to trick people with fake offers and reward messages. WhatsApp, one of the most widely used messaging platforms in India, has become a common channel for such fraud attempts. Scammers pose as trusted brands, send messages promising free money or discounts, and encourage users to click on suspicious links. A new scam message claiming to offer Rs 2,000 in the name of Airtel is now making rounds on WhatsApp.
An Instagram user (@arbajahmad009) recently shared a video warning people about a suspicious WhatsApp message circulating in the name of Airtel. The message reportedly comes from an unknown number and carries the text, “Airtel- Diwali ka Tyohaar.”
It claims that the sender has received Rs 2,000 through a link included in the message. It then encourages the recipient to click on the same link to claim the money. The promise of free cash may tempt users to tap the link without checking whether the offer is genuine.
However, the Instagram user has warned that clicking on the link can put users’ bank accounts at risk.
While festive cash offers may sound attractive, users should be careful before clicking on links received through WhatsApp. Here are some simple steps to avoid falling victim to such scams:
Always remember that a message promising free money does not always mean you are getting a genuine reward. Always verify festive offers through official sources before clicking on any link or sharing personal information.
