Apple has officially got a new CEO, but the reports suggest that Tim Cook is unlikely to disappear from the company’s decision making anytime soon. After stepping down as CEO after 15 years, Cook has now taken the role of executive chairman, while longtime hardware chief John Ternus has become Apple’s new CEO. However, reports suggest that Cook will continue to play an active role at the company, with his new compensation package indicating that Apple still expects him to remain closely involved.
Cook, who led Apple during the most successful periods in its history (yet), has publicly shown confidence in Ternus. The new CEO has also praised Cook’s leadership and mentorship. Apple appears to have carefully planned the transition, giving Ternus a strong product roadmap and healthy financial position as he takes charge.
Even after leaving the CEO position, Tim Cook is said to continue influencing many important areas. His experience dealing with governments and political leaders, particularly in Washington and Beijing, could remain valuable to Apple.
Cook is also reportedly moving out of the CEO’s office at Apple Park, which will now be occupied by Ternus. However, the former CEO is expected to receive a new office on Apple’s campus and continue visiting Apple locations around the world, the report added.
Cook himself has reportedly indicated that Apple will remain his top priority, suggesting that his executive chairman role will be considerably more active than a traditional chairman position.
Apple’s compensation plans have also drawn attention. Cook is expected to receive a $2 million base salary in 2027, down from $3 million as CEO. However, he has reportedly been awarded restricted stock units worth $45 million.
Ternus, meanwhile, will receive a $3 million salary and stock awards with a target value of around $55 million.
The size of Cook’s package is unusual for a chairman and suggests that Apple expects him to continue contributing significantly. His compensation may even exceed that of Ternus in certain scenarios depending on Apple’s stock performance.
