With temperatures rising across many parts of the country, owning an AC or an air cooler has become more important than ever. Many people are now looking for cooling appliances that can provide relief from the heat. Two popular options are portable ACs and tower air coolers. Both are designed to cool a room, but they work in very different ways and offer different experiences. From cooling performance and electricity usage to price and maintenance, here’s a simple comparison between portable ACs and tower air coolers.
A portable AC works like a regular AC. It pulls warm air from the room, cools it using refrigerant, and sends cold air back into the room. The hot air is pushed outside through a pipe connected to a window. Meanwhile, a tower air cooler uses water-based cooling. It pulls hot air through wet cooling pads, and as the water evaporates, the air becomes cooler before it is circulated into the room.
Portable ACs are much more expensive than tower air coolers. A good portable AC can cost anywhere between Rs 25,000 and Rs 45,000 or even more. Tower air coolers are far more budget-friendly and usually cost between Rs 6,000 and Rs 12,000.
Portable ACs provide stronger and faster cooling. They can lower the room temperature significantly and work well even during humid weather or monsoon season. Meanwhile, tower air coolers offer a fresh cooling effect, but they do not reduce the room temperature as much as an AC. They work best in dry and hot regions. In humid weather, their cooling effect becomes weaker.

One of the biggest differences between the two is power usage. Portable ACs consume a lot more electricity, usually between 900W and 1,500W or higher. This can increase monthly electricity bills. In comparison, tower air coolers are much more energy-efficient and generally consume only around 130W to 200W, making them cheaper to run daily.
Portable ACs need a window for the exhaust pipe and work best in closed rooms. They also require filter cleaning and periodic refrigerant checks. On the other hand, tower air coolers are easier to use because they do not need installation. However, they require regular water refilling and cleaning of cooling pads.
If you live in a dry area and want an affordable cooling option with low electricity usage, a tower air cooler can be a good choice. However, if you want stronger cooling and live in a humid region, a portable AC is a better option despite the higher cost and power consumption.
