Meta and Apple team up to turn Mac Studios into an AI supercomputer: Check details

HIGHLIGHTS

Meta has released Muse Spark Open, an 816-billion-parameter open-weight AI model with a 1-million-token context window.

The model can run on two Apple Mac Studios powered by M5 Ultra chips, with 1,024GB of combined unified memory.

Muse Spark Open supports coding, bug fixes, software engineering and video analysis.

Tech company Meta has announced Muse Spark Open, which the company is claiming to be the “most capable” open-weight model in the US. The tech giant noted in a blog post that the agentic capabilities of its multimodal model will be available on Apple Mac Studios running the M5 Ultra chipset. The advanced AI can code and put to work in agentic tasks such as software engineering, multi-step reasoning, long-horizon tasks and more. While releasing its weights, Meta said Muse Spark Open will offer 816 billion parameters and a token context window of one million.

Meta claims Muse Spark Open will be the “first model in its class” to run on desktops using two Mac Studios powered by the M5 Ultra with the latest MLX framework. Two M5 Ultras with integrated GPUs and 1,024GB of unified memory (combined) can serve as a “supercomputer” and perform actions with Muse Spark Open entirely on-device, in select cases. Speaking on the update, “we’re excited for mommy and daddy to be playing nice again,” Alexandr Wang, Meta’s AI chief, said, Axios reported.

Apple earlier said the 512GB variant of the Mac Studio will arrive this month. However, an official announcement is still pending. The agentic AI can be used to generate code, fix bugs and add new features to online clients. Plus, it can review video clips frame by frame, select the best moments and crop them based on user requests. This open-weight version of Muse Spark can deliver up to 3.95x kernel-level speedups on AMD and NVIDIA GPUs.

The limited commercial terms of the released weights will allow several developers to use the Muse family model for free. Plus, it can be customised based on user preferences via TorchTitan. “To run it on Apple silicon, use MLX, which pulls the weights directly from Hugging Face,“ Meta said. It will be available via Hugging Face.

The latest release follows Muse Glimmer, which is Meta’s smaller AI model for PCs. With the move, the company aims to focus more on on-device processes so that less data is processed in the cloud and data remains secure within the local machine of a developer.
