AC vs dehumidifier: Which one is better for reducing indoor humidity

The monsoon season is here. While it offers some relief from the summer heat, it also brings high humidity inside homes. Even if the temperature is not very high, the air can feel sticky and uncomfortable. Too much moisture indoors can also lead to damp walls, unusual smells and mould growth. Many people use their AC to deal with the problem. Meanwhile, others think about buying a dehumidifier. Both appliances can reduce moisture in the air, but they are designed for different purposes. An AC is mainly built to cool a room, while a dehumidifier is made to remove excess moisture. Knowing how each one works can help you choose the right appliance for your home, especially during the rainy season.

Dehumidifier

If your main concern is reducing indoor humidity, a dehumidifier is the better option. It is specially designed to remove moisture from the air without trying to cool the room. A dehumidifier pulls in humid air and removes the water from it. The dry air is then released back into the room. Many models also allow you to set the humidity level. This makes a dehumidifier useful in places where dampness is common, such as laundry rooms, storage spaces, or other areas that feel humid during the monsoon. Some models also include a laundry mode that helps dry clothes faster indoors.

The only drawback is that a dehumidifier can make the room slightly warmer because it does not remove heat from the air.

Air conditioner

An AC can also remove moisture from the air, but that is not its main job. It reduces humidity as part of the cooling process. As warm air passes over the AC’s cold coils, moisture turns into water and is drained away. At the same time, the AC cools the room by sending the heat outside. This makes an AC the better choice when the weather is both hot and humid.

If your AC has a dry mode, it can focus more on reducing humidity without making the room too cold. Even then, it is not as effective as a dedicated dehumidifier.

AC vs dehumidifier: Which one should you choose?

You can go for a dehumidifier if your main goal is to reduce indoor humidity, prevent dampness, stop mould growth or dry clothes indoors. It works better when cooling is not needed. If the weather is hot and humid, an AC is the better option because it cools the room while also removing some moisture. In homes with very high humidity, some people use both appliances together. The dehumidifier keeps moisture under control, while the AC maintains a comfortable temperature.
