The UHR90DV is a clear statement of intent and Optoma wants to be in the same conversation as JVC and Sony, but whether it belongs there is what this review sets out to find out and whether the image quality and trade-offs justify the asking price.

At 486 x 432.5 x 185.5 mm and 11.5 kg, the UHR90DV is in no way a discrete projector. For all intents and purposes, this is an installation projector, designed to live permanently in a dedicated theatre room rather than move between spaces. The chassis is large and designed to accommodate the thermal management that a 5,000-lumen RGB triple-laser engine demands and the build communicates throughout that this is a long-term investment rather than a regular projector purchase.
All lens controls are motorised and zoom, focus and lens shift operate via electric motors driven from the backlit remote, with no manual dial on the lens itself. On the connectivity front, it is as comprehensive as an installation-grade product. We get three HDMI inputs (one HDMI 2.1 supporting 48 Gbps bandwidth with ARC/eARC, two HDMI 2.0 at 18 Gbps), three USB-A power ports, S/PDIF optical output, 3.5mm analogue audio, RJ45 for LAN control, RS-232C and two 12V triggers for automated screen and lighting integration. There is no built-in speaker, which is the correct decision for hardware of this calibre. The UHR90DV is designed to be the visual centrepiece of a complete home cinema system, not a standalone device. There is a reason the best home cinema installations do not begin with the projector but with the room that has controlled lighting and acoustics treatment that make the pursuit of colour accuracy a worthwhile endeavour.
In my use, I found that the operating noise at 27–30 dB was impressive for a projector at this output level. But in a proper home theater setup where it will be ceiling-mounted at a typical viewing distance, the fan is quiet enough that it will not intrude on quiet passages in film content, which at this price is a baseline expectation the UHR90DV comfortably meets.
The main engineering achievement of the UHR90DV is that it achieves 5,000 ISO lumens and 96% BT.2020 colour gamut coverage simultaneously, without compromise between the two.
Brightness and colour saturation typically have an inverse relationship in projection. If you push higher output, the colours begin to look diluted, and if you restrict the colour space, you can recover brightness. Most projectors make a compromise somewhere along this curve, but the RGB triple-laser architecture largely dissolves it. By using dedicated red, green and blue laser light sources operating independently, rather than a white light source filtered through a colour wheel, the projector generates its primaries directly. The result is colour purity that holds at full output rather than washing out under the weight of the brightness.
In practice, the image at full output is strikingly vivid without appearing artificially oversaturated. Neon signage retains distinct individual shades rather than bleeding into adjacent colours. Skin tones remain neutral across very different scene exposures. Subtle gradations in complex textured surfaces such as period costumes, stone walls and foliage are resolved rather than collapsed into approximations. This is what 96% BT.2020 coverage in a 5,000-lumen projector actually looks like in use, and in my encounter with various projectors over the years, the UHR90DV offers a different category of experience as opposed to a lamp-based or single-laser home cinema projection.
The light source is rated at 30,000 hours in Eco mode, which effectively removes lamp replacement from the ownership conversation for the life of a realistic home cinema installation.
Filmmaker Mode
For film content, Filmmaker Mode is where the UHR90DV’s character as a cinema projector reveals itself most clearly. The mode disables motion interpolation, preserves the intended frame rate and targets D65 colour temperature, prioritising the filmmaker’s intent and the experience is tonally precise and deeply satisfying.
HDR tone mapping in Filmmaker Mode is among the strongest available from any home cinema projector currently on sale. The UHR90DV’s brightness headroom gives its dynamic tone mapping significantly more room to operate than projectors at a third of its output. Demanding sequences with rapid transitions between extreme highlights and deep shadows are handled with genuine control. The nighttime trench sequence in 1917, with its burst of orange flares against dense smoke and deep shadow, remains one of cinema’s most reliable HDR stress tests. On the UHR90DV, the highlights remain intense without clipping, the shadow textures are preserved rather than crushed and the transitions between the two happen with a naturalism that reflects the physics of the light engine rather than the limits of tone mapping. Across a 120-inch screen, fine detail in hair, fabric, architectural surfaces and environmental textures stays fully resolved without any artificial sharpening.
The colours in Filmmaker Mode rewards close attention and it serves the content rather than competing for attention. Complex hues in adjacent image areas maintain their individuality and gradation across the full HDR brightness range with a completeness that reflects both the light engine’s capabilities and the quality of the tone mapping.
IMAX Enhanced Mode
It is rare for a projector to be certified for both IMAX and Dolby Vision. The UHR90DV has both of them. Of course you will need physical Blu-ray discs with IMAX Enhanced certification for the mode’s intended use case. IMAX Enhanced Mode is nominally the mode for viewing certified IMAX content at the 1.90:1 aspect ratio with DTS:X audio and IMAX Digital Media Remastering applied. But its more impressive application is when applied to standard HDR content, it produces a balance of colour, brightness and gradation that makes a credible case against large televisions in a properly controlled environment.
The mode optimises for visual impact rather than the precision targets of Filmmaker Mode and the result is an image that is richer and more immediately engaging for general viewing. The colours are vivid without appearing synthetic, HDR effect has genuine punch and the wide-angle viewing characteristic of projection on a white screen also removes the edge vignetting that LCD panels produce at oblique angles, which becomes an increasingly obvious advantage as screen sizes increase. For gaming in particular, IMAX Enhanced Mode is the setting that most consistently rivals television-quality HDR rendering: sunlit outdoor environments, high-contrast action sequences and richly lit interiors all benefit from the combination of brightness and colour volume that this mode unlocks.
Dolby Vision
The UHR90DV’s Dolby Vision implementation is the most sophisticated in Optoma’s current lineup. The fundamental advantage it carries over HDR10 is dynamic metadata: where HDR10 applies a single static tone-mapping target across an entire film, Dolby Vision adjusts on a scene-by-scene basis, allowing highlights in individual scenes to be maximised without compromising darker scenes later in the same film.
Four sub-modes address different viewing contexts. Cinema is the default for film content in dedicated rooms and the most tonally faithful. Bright targets environments with some ambient light. Dark is calibrated for fully blacked-out rooms where shadow nuance is the priority. Vivid emphasises contrast and colour saturation for general entertainment viewing. The UHR90DV’s higher base brightness gives each mode enough headroom to feel purposeful rather than constrained. Even the dark Mode is well-balanced here and for films built around deep shadow work, it is the strongest choice.
For movie content, Cinema Mode is consistently the right starting point. Vivid Mode works well for general entertainment but can make deliberate film colour decisions feel overstated. The dynamic metadata advantage of Dolby Vision is most apparent in content with wide intra-scene brightness variation, where HDR10’s static target would either clip highlights or underexpose shadows in compensation.
Gaming
The UHR90DV is a credible gaming display alongside its home cinema role. HDMI 2.1 supports 4K/120Hz input, ALLM handles automatic low latency switching for compatible sources, and input lag in 4K/60Hz mode is 20 ms. Enabling ultra-low latency mode reduces input lag at 1080p/240Hz which is competitive with gaming monitors.
IMAX Enhanced Mode performs particularly well with game content, as noted above. The HDR rendering is vivid and immediate, and the projector’s brightness and colour volume give sunlit environments, snow-covered landscapes and high-contrast action sequences a visual quality that rivals televisions rather than merely approximating them. For buyers considering the UHR90DV partly as a gaming display, this is a meaningful capability.
PureEngine Ultra
PureEngine Ultra is Optoma’s advanced image processing suite, divided into four independently adjustable parameters: brightness, colour, motion and detail. Used judiciously, it can enhance the image for specific content types or viewing conditions. Used aggressively, it tends to undermine the natural quality that the RGB triple-laser engine produces without assistance. The UHR90DV’s image is strong enough at its defaults that PureEngine Ultra is best treated as an optional refinement rather than a baseline improvement and for most serious cinema viewing, leaving it at minimal settings or off entirely is the right call.
If you are comparing the UHR90DV against a 100-inch television for your family living room, you have already misunderstood the product. It is built for a specific context and belongs inside a dedicated home cinema with a quality screen, controlled lighting, proper acoustics and a capable external audio system, the last of which is essential given the absence of built-in speakers. That setup itself costs significantly more than the projector itself, but it makes sense if you are building a multi-crore home theater installation.
